A severe winter storm continued to hit the United States on Christmas Eve with dangerous cold and heavy snowfall, leaving fatal car crashes, thousands of canceled flights and millions of people at risk of future power outages in its wake.
The huge footprint of winter weather and its timing during the busy holiday week make an Arctic blast especially dangerous. The National Weather Service on Friday said its warnings and advisories cover about 200 million people, 'one of the largest winter weather alerts and advisories ever,' forecasters said.

Western New York blizzard declared ‘major disaster’ as death toll rises; thousands without power on Christmas
First responders had to abandon ambulances due to white out conditions in Eerie County, where at least seven people died during the Christmas blizzard and thousands are without power.BUFFALO, N.Y. – Blizzard conditions driven by lake-effect snow continued in western New York on Christmas, where officials are calling this the worst winter storm in decades. Several feet of snow effectively buried roads and homes in Eerie County, including Watertown, Hamburg and Buffalo, New York. In a tweet Sunday, officials said the Buffalo Airport will be closed until Tuesday because of high winds, snow drifts and low visibility that have made air traffic unsafe. HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER During a news conference on Christmas morning, Eerie County Executive Mark Poloncarz called the snowstorm "a major disaster" comparable to the blizzard of 1977 and worse than the historic blizzard in November. Four more deaths from the blizzard were confirmed on Christmas, bringing the death toll to at least seven people in western New York throughout the winter storm, according to Eerie County officials. Some victims were found in vehicles, while others were found frozen under other circumstances. www.foxweather.com/weather-news/buffalo-new-york-lake-effect-blizzard-turns-deadly-power-outages-rescues check the photoes

Am I wrong in assuming that with rain coming to Buffalo that they will trade snow problems for roof collapses when the heavy snow load gets soaked with rain water?

On the news this morn from spectrum it was mentioned that the rain will make snow much heavier and much more difficult to clear. They DPW and regular civilians are all trying to clear as much snow as possible. The National Guard is doing the same plus going door to door checking on people especially elderly and disabled who live alone with or without friends or family to watch over them. The Niagara River is swollen with excess water.
