Yesterday afternoon around 1 o'clock our gas furnace quit. It a H.E. unit & knowing practically nothing about them I called the company that installed it. They sent a service guy out & it turned out to be the pressure switch, a $50 part. Luckily, their supplier had one on the shelf, he installed it & we'll all good here. If that furnace had quit today or tomorrow we would have been sh*t outta luck until Monday.
Right now the temp is 12* with a wind chill of O*

Right now the temp is 12* with a wind chill of O* This is certainly no time for anyone to lose their heating system. Glad it was nothing serious and you were able to get it fixed quickly. We have finally gotten it to 68 in the entire house, but the wind has calmed down. If the wind kicks up again, the thermometer in here will probably drop again. When the Christmas holiday is in the rear view mirror we will probably have a service man in to check out the unit and make sure there is not a mechanical reason for the lack of ability to keep the house warm. We have never had a problem keeping warm before and we had a period of several days that were well below zero LAST winter. We don't need this crap. We both take blood thinners and are always cold to begin with.

Glad all worked out for you BHU. Those heat pumps can act up. The one I had at the other apartment was not heating my apartment that well and that was in the middle of winter of last year. The HAVAC tech that was hired by MHA loves to explain everything so I had to listen to his rendition of heating 101. I just wanted the heat to work.....
When I was renting an apartment from the Bruno and Kay Arcuri while I was working for school district I was watching the house one winter cause they decided to vacation for a month in Florida. The downstairs apartment where they lived has a heat pump. I came home for school one evening opened the door and the heat hit me in the face. I thought what is happening. So I called Mike Arcuri and he came over., The pump was pouring out so much heat that the candles in there apartment were melting. He had a tech come over to fix it and all was well again. Never know what these things will do

Ours is a high efficiency & as long as the t-stat is ok & the filter is changed on a regular basis it's been reliable. Glad your place is warming up.

Never know what these things will do Thanks PB. Our system is a High Efficieny gas, forced hot air not a heat pump which is a totally different system. All I know is that those systems cost a fortune or did at one time.

You are probably right about the price of a heat pump BHU. Our unit was replaced about 5 yrs ago and it was $7000 and change. The trouble with a heat pump is that they only seem to last about 12 or 15 yrs. The unit that was here when we moved here lasted about a year after we bought the house. The replacement at that time was about 4K. That unit lasted about 15 yrs. 15 yrs later the price had almost doubled.
We make sure to have it checked. We had a slow refrigerant leak once on the old unit and had to have several pounds put in it. The refrigerant is now over $120 per pound. The unit took 2 pounds last spring but it was because where they hook their equipment to the unit had a very small slow leak. The tech tested for leaks with the unit running before he did anything else so we didn't get charged for the refrigerant. Two years ago the unit just quit working in the middle of summer. The technician new exactly what was wrong. There is a relay on the outside unit and an earwig crawled into the relay and got squashed and rendered the relay inoperable. He simply removed the bug and all was well. He only charged us half the price of a service call. He only was here for about 15 minutes and he said his next call was just up the road.

Good luck telling Barb to set the thermostat that low. It would take a braver man than I. Repurposing the OD building would be a challenge. Removing the press would require disassembling that wing of the building. The rest of the building is not energy efficient at all. Those big windows are striking to look at but dress warmly if you sit near one in January.
Tradition in our household is that baby Jesus does not go into the manger until we return from midnight mass. Schedules has been remade at our church and there is no longer a midnight mass on Christmas Eve. I just found baby Jesus still sleeping in a drawer while I was putting away the dining room table ware.

The press room was built around the press so yes, the addition would have to be opened up or torn down to get that monster out of there. I suppose if they were going to scrap it they could take it out through a hole in the roof in pieces. Can you imagine the scrap value of that thing? It is doubtful that anyone would buy it to move and use at a different location so it will probably get scrapped at some point. It was a source of trouble frequently and caused many a night of late papers and a press crew working most of the next day after working all night, just to have it up and running for the next night's run. I am sure that was a factor in deciding to print the paper elsewhere. A few years after I left they moved the printing to Ithaca, then later to Binghamton, and then Syracuse. I have no idea where it is printed now. Ithica was another Gannett location. I don't know who was the corporate owner when it moved to Binghamton or Syracuse.
That old building IS very cold and energy inefficient. It is also a maze of hallways. Everyone had space heaters under their desks.

Once the drug addicts get word that the press as scrap metal would make for good money they can slowly dismantle the press if someone left a door open!

They would do it for the scrap price and a bag of weed.

Baby Jesus is in the manger. this would never fit on my table or in my apartment but it is impressive. Notice no women except Mary. The reason is because all the women are home preparing the feast of 6 fishes!
