Just watched the news. it is in the mid 40s right now. Rain is supposed to move in between now and midnight, and between now and 4 in the morning the temperatures will fall into the teens or single digits and the wind chills with be at or below zero. They keep changing to time lines and temperature range but it is going to just get damned awful cold and the rain is going to turn to ice and then snow on top of it.
I got everything done that I need to do. I won't have to get on the road with all the idiots and maniacs that don't have the first clue how to drive on snow or ice. They have already begun to pre-treat the interstate. Makes no sense to me if it is going to rain before it snows.
I will just stay home and keep all that corrosive crap off of my car.

Is it a situation where the ground has already frozen and rain will freeze as soon as it hits the pavement?

It was 13 degrees when I woke up at 7 and in 40 minutes it has dropped to 10 and is expected to keep falling into the single digits. There is a pretty stiff wind blowing that is causing power outages in some areas due to downed trees. The windchill is -16. I just came inside from the motorhome. With the threats of power-outages I wanted to start the generator and run it for a few minutes, and also opened the propane valve and lit the furnace for a few minutes just to get the gas flowing and to make sure it would light if needed.
We seem to have escaped the icy roads so far, and haven't had any snow yet. A county truck just went by a few minutes ago and treated the road. Kathy's nephew and his girlfriend always call in an Insta-cart curbside order to Kroger's on major holidays and I have to go an pick it up between 11 this morning and 6 this evening. Usually is seasonal goodies, cheeses, candy, and a bouquet for Kathy. I am glad I got all of OUR shopping done other than picking up that order. They are the ones that always come down in summer for a week or so and help me with projects that I can't do myself anymore. Kathy's older sister died at 43 from breast cancer so Kathy has always been more like a mother figure to the 6 nieces and nephews who were all quite young when their mom died and her nephew is the one who she has the closest relationship with.
The weather map is upside down again this morning. Channel two is showing 40 degrees in Utica. At least we are not expecting the heavy snow conditions that may strike CNY.

I think this is the third "once in a generation" storm in the last 3 years. Daughter Carrin has decided to postpone her trip home by one day.

They keep talking about all the rain & then bitter temps causing a freeze over but haven't seen it yet except for the rain. Right now we have 38*. There was about 8 inches of snow on our garage roof with a layer of ice on the bottom. So yesterday I got the ladder out & went up there & spent an hour & half shoveling it off. The roof doesn't have much of a pitch to it so there's no risk of me falling off unless I do something stupid. But at least now I don't have to worry about something happening once the big freeze hits & turns everything into a block of ice up there.
Watching the Weather Channel, Buffalo is getting hit with a blizzard off Ontario & it's 16*, so it's coming.

The cold snap is affecting the power grid here in the South. TVA has instituted periodic 15 minute rolling blackouts across the state. Our power went off for the fifteen minutes earlier and as fate would have it Kathy had a cake in the oven. We were in a panic and ready to move to the motorhome when it came back on and the tv channels were announcing the 15 minute black outs. Whew!
Right now it is holding at 7 degrees. Our high for today is expected to only hit between 10 and 15 degrees. The wind is making things miserable. A steady 15-20 mile an hour breeze with 30+ mph gusts.
The news just reported that there has been a 40-45 degree drop in temperature since this time yesterday. I will be cold through the first part of next week, gradually warming until it hits the 60's the end of next week. No wonder everyone is getting sick.

Pretty windy here also. We ordered Chinese take-out and had Door Dash deliver it. Kathy is still busy prepping food and desserts for Christmas and I was not about to go out again. The wind is so cold that it blows right through heavy blue jeans. I was out with the dog, all bundled up and my legs were freezing while I stood at the gate watching her. I was bundled up so that only a small portion of my face was exposed. The only skin visible was my upper cheeks and my eyelids.

Wow. It is only 10:40 and it is down to two degrees with a wind chill listed on the news as 18 below zero. They say it may drop as low as 5-15 degrees below zero before morning. Our 100 yr old house has always stayed quite warm but with it insulated for Southern weather it is cool in here tonight and the walls on the windward side of the house are pretty cold. The thermostat is set on 75 and it is only holding the house at 70.
The motorhome has three batteries. One starting battery and two more hooked in series that supply lights, water pump, fridge and furnace. The generator additionally allows for full use of the stove, microwave, tv, and With it this cold I have those batteries hooked to a trickle charger just to insure that they remain fully charged. This cold is supposed to slacken a bit but will last into the first part of next week. We haven't done much camping with the motorhome this season but it truly IS a comfort to know we can go out there if we lose power and heat for any length of time. We have always had trailers, but none of them ever had a generator. At our age it really lowers the stress level just knowing we have it and won't have to pack up with the dog and try and find a warm hotel room somewhere if the power goes out.
We have the bitter cold, but I see that CNY is dealing with the accumulating and drifting snow and blizzard conditions. I hope all of you are able to stay in, stay warm and stay safe over the weekend. Keeping everyone in our prayers for safety, a merry and blessed Christmas, and hope for peace and a better year in 2023.

Temp here is 2 degrees also, I don't plan to be out much today. We will have the first Christmas dinner today. Daughter Carrin decided not to travel yesterday (which I think was smart) so we will do things over again when they get here. I think the only tasks I have left is to vacuum 3 rooms and assisting with any kitchen tasks Barb trusts me with.

Well, I woke up at 7, in the dark and cold with another rolling black-out in progress. It was 0 with the windchill estimated at -20 due to a sustained 10-15 mph breeze. The power came back on and I turned the thermostat to 74 to warm the house back up. It was only 58 in here. I hate waking up with no capability to make my coffee. That first cup took the chill out of my bones but I didn't know whether I should drink it or warm my hands in it. The house no more than began to warm to about 65 and they hit us with another 15 minute rolling outage. That will probably be the story for most of the day today. The grid gets overloaded mainly due to the fact that most homes here don't have furnaces. Just about every home is heated with an electric heat pump that runs on 220 volts. It is not going to go above 20 here today. We won't see temperatures above 30 until next Tuesday. I see that upstate NY is getting hammered with snow and extreme cold also. At least NY homes are equipped for cold weather with heavy insulation and many with fireplaces or wood stoves. An oil or gas furnace certainly can blast out enough heat to quickly warm a house back up when power comes back on even if you DO have an outage. I guess we are fortunate. At least we aren't getting any significant snow and there is no accumulation. The roads are bare. Just bitterly cold and windy. If you have to go out and about be careful. I see that your temperatures are not going to get out of the low teens. I have to make one quick trip to the store later for eggs and dinner rolls for tomorrow. Kathy is going through eggs like crazy with all her cooking and baking. I bought a carton of 18 yesterday and this morning there were 3 left for me and the dog to have for breakfast. She made potato and macaroni salad yesterday along with a couple more pumpkin breads and her pistachio cake. Today she needs eggs for deviled eggs for tomorrow and a pumpkin pie for us, another for my sister's family, and one for the neighbors that are coming for dinner to take home with them. Two more cartons of 18 should carry us through I would hope. lol. That is the news from here. What is going on in your area? I started this post when the lights came back on early this morning, and before I could post it, they went off again. I am hitting the key to post it before I lose it again.

I do not understand that when the owners of this apartment building built this they didn't put any heat in the bathroom. All they put in is a heat light above the bathroom sink!!!! I forgot to leave the door open last night and it was freezing in there this morning and even with door open it is cold. Good grief....I may not shower until it warms up in May!!!

Hmmm. You may become socially unacceptable before May. You certainly won't have to worry about people maintaining a 6 ft area around you. Your neighbors may call the police to do a welfare check to look for a dead body when the odor begins to permeate the hall near your door, hahaha. It is too bad that you don't have both the heat lamp and a heat vent in your bathroom. We had on of those heat lamps in the ceiling between the tub/shower and the sink when we lived in N. Utica. It felt great when I stepped out of the shower and while I shaved. It has warmed up to +10 outside but the house still is not warming like it should with the wind blowing as hard as it is outside. The windchill is still in the negative numbers. I don't think we will reach the high of 19 today. The kitchen and the rear of the house has warmed to 67 but here in the living room it refuses to come above 63. I am still sitting here with slippers, heavy socks, jeans, and a Woolrich wool shirt. It is supposed to be 29 tomorrow and a low of 12. They are saying there won't be any need for further rolling blackouts, but I will believe it when I see it. We will have to see how low the windchills go tonight. I will be happy when it just gets warm enough for the heat pump to keep up. This wind and windchill is really causing havoc. When we lived up there in Utica area -10 and windchill in the negative teens was nothing we got terribly concerned with. I stood on the loading dock at the OD when it was that cold and all I did was dress a little warmer and take frequent breaks in the office. That was probably the coldest job I ever had with three overhead doors open and the wind howling down Catherine Street. The dock workers that worked for me had to stand out there loading trucks with papers coming down a belt for two or three hours without a break. Me and my assistant manager used to spell them so they could come up in the office, grab a coffee and warm up.

Maybe in storms like this energy companies should demand that customers lower there heat to 62 degrees so as to prevent blanck outs or rolling power outages. I went to Walmart it is very very cold out and I was surprised to not see many people at Walmart or at Consumer Square.
It is 10 degrees but feels like -4 degrees with 12MPR winds so at least the wind has gone back to normal.
The OD building is up for sale again. I thought they auctioned it off a year ago and Utica got it. Must be City Hall wants to sell the building or I may be wrong.

A downstate investment group called Mohawk Observer LLC bought it at auction last spring. Having worked in that historic old building I have had an interest in what was being done with it. I was worried that it might be torn down. I was interested to see what any buyer might do with the three story tall old Goss automatic web offset printing press. It occupies the entire left side of the building, 3 stories high and from Oriskany St to Catherine St.
