wibx950.com/ixp/40/p/ames-returning-new-york-2023/The article certainly caught my eye. I shopped often at the Ame's store in Oneida years ago when I lived in Verona and also at the NH Ame's store. Brings back memories. We bought our first artificial Christmas tree there. A white flocked tree with a color wheel. There was a wide selection of discount department stores in those days. Nichols, Stars, Bradlee's, and Kmart. Kmart outlived the rest of them, but they have all come and gone. We have a sparsely occupied strip mall here that was anchored by an Ame's store. Now it is only partially occupied by an antique flea market, a small jewelry store and a dance studio for kids. leaving the Ame's store empty on one end and an empty grocery store on the other. Bristol had two Kmart stores. One was torn down and replaced with Lowe's. The other survived until the merger with Sears, which brought about the demise of BOTH stores. That store is now Uhaul truck rental and climate controlled self-storage. If Ame's actually were to come back I doubt that they could survive competing with Walmart or Target. Walmart especially has already brought about the demise of way too many locally owned small business enterprises and I sincerely doubt that Ames would survive. They have managed to get rid of any serious competition with the exception of Target. Yes, there are still some of us that prefer to spend a few extra cents for merchandise that is a step up from the crap that Wally sells.

I thought Ames went bankrupt, but I'm not sure. I remember the store in N.H. I use to buy a lot of my work clothes at KMart & I have winter boot socks that I bought from them close to 10 years ago that I still wear. I bought winter socks from Wally that are crap. I also have a suede jacket that I bought at Kmart probably 20 years ago for $50 bucks. A couple years ago I ran it thru the wash on gentle cycle & it came out good as new. That's supposedly a no-no but the cost to dry clean it was more then I paid for it.
