A time to pause and reverently remember all those that died at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. I lowered my flag to half staff early this morning in remembrance. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor my dad quit high school in his senior year as did so many others, to join the Army Air Force and later served in the Pacific. He completed his education and received his diploma later.
While on the way to Vietnam aboard the destroyer USS Alfred A. Cunningham, DD752 we pulled into Pearl Harbor for 4 days. We tied up across the harbor from Battleship Row. One side of the harbor abuzz with activity associated with a shipyard, while on the other side of the harbor on Ford Island there is a somber and peaceful place where an eternal sadness hangs over the area where so many died on that Sunday morning.
If anyone visits the island of Oahu take the time to visit the Arizona Memorial, the USS Oklahoma Memorial, and buy a ticket and tour the USS Missouri. I went aboard the USS New Jersey while it was tied up in Long Beach, California before it deployed to Vietnam. Touring a battleship is a once in a lifetime experience. The sheer size, and the enormous amount of firepower is amazing.

My Uncle Tommy was there when it happened. He was a Chief Petty Officer and served in the Navy for over 20 years. When he died he was still able to wear his uniform. He was an Uncle on my Mom's side of family the Demma family. He was also an officer on a submarine! I think my sister has the letters and souvenirs he sent to my Mom. After he retired from the Navy he and his second wife opened a shoe business and did very well. They lived in Rochester.
