My cousin married a Jewish man many years ago and one year she was in Utica to see her family during our holidays and made this for a gathering. This is a delicious appetizer and I have made this for Christmas parties in a number of places either at work or in housing parties. I am going to make them this year for the new place I am living. Middle Eastern Stuffed Dates By Miriam Szokovski Ingredients 20-25 medjool dates ½ lb ground beef or lamb 2 cloves garlic, crushed ½ tsp kosher salt ¼ tsp cumin ¼ tsp allspice ¼ tsp coriander ¼ tsp cinnamon 1 tbsp pine nuts ½ heaping tablespoon medium-heat harissa paste 3 tbsp very finely diced or minced onion ⅛ cup chopped parsley Directions Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Slit the dates open and remove the pits. Set aside. Mix the ground beef with all the rest of the ingredients. Take small amounts of the ground beef mixture, approximately 1 heaping tablespoon at a time (depending on the size of your date), and roll into a small ball. Press into the date and spread out so it fills the date. Keep in mind, the meat will shrink when cooked, so don’t skimp on the filling. Bake for 10-12 minutes at 400°F (200°C). Cut one open to make sure they are cooked through. Serve warm, with tahini sauce (tahini paste mixed with water, lemon juice, salt and garlic) on the side or drizzled on top. Yields: 20-25 stuffed dates www.chabad.org/recipes/recipe_cdo/aid/5691912/jewish/Middle-Eastern-Stuffed-Dates.htm#utm_medium=email&utm_source=99_kosher_cooking_en&utm_campaign=en&utm_content=contentShe told me where to find this recipe plus it is not a bad website for information

When we lived in Phoenix Arizona when I was a youngster we had a date palm in our yard. I remember that my mom and dad hired a young Mexican lad with an extension ladder to harvest the dates. I don't remember what sort of preparation was necessary to preserve of keep them, but I do remember how sweet they were and how good the date and nut bread was that my mom made. I liked eating them plain. Never had them stuffed with anything.

Date and Nut Bread I love. With cream cheese spread on top of each slice!

When Kathy makes banana bread she occasionally whips an 8 oz brick of Philly Cream Cheese with a dash of vanilla and powdered sugar. Mixes it to spreadable consistency but not whipped like a cream cheese frosting or as sweet. I love cream cheese just about any way you could eat it.I go through at least a package a week on toasted everything bagels.

Granddaughter Gabby is here today helping Barb make Christmas goodies. It is interesting to hear instruction going on. Baking is not just recipes, there are a lot of things that need "hands on" instruction. My help is limited to tasting samples and emptying the dishwasher.

Granddaughter Gabby is here today helping Barb make Christmas goodies. It is interesting to hear instruction going on. Baking is not just recipes, there are a lot of things that need "hands on" instruction. My help is limited to tasting samples and emptying the dishwasher. I am in charge of purchasing the ingredients and then I am told to stay out of her way. I DO sneak out there for samples. I told her it would be cruel and inhumane to make me stay in the living room with those smells wafting through the house. Today was two kinds of cookies, some more pumpkin bread, and a batch of peanut butter fudge. Maybe I should volunteer to empty the dishwasher. It would be a opportunity to steal a couple more cookies while she is busy doing other more important things. Tomorrow will be pumpkin pies for us as well as for my sister and brother in-law, and a pistachio cake for us for dessert on Christmas day. ( I am waiting as we speak for the fudge to cool enough to be cut.)
