(WKBW) — There is now already less traffic on the New York State Thruway than normal now that commercial drivers are not allowed on the thruway between Rochester and the Pennsylvania state line. Ahead of the closure, truck drivers at Jim's Truck Plaza in Cheektowaga were fueling up and stocking up. "My daughter actually made me her special sandwiches last night so I'll be munching on those," Cornelius Berry, a truck driver said. With the intense snow on the way, truck drivers had to race against the clock. "Well I'm gonna gas up and I'm trying to get as far away from New York as I possibly can," RaShawn Poindexter, another truck driver said. New York Governor Kathy Hochul told 7 News the New York State Thruway, between exit 46 Rochester and exit 61 PA border, will be closed to commercial traffic beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday. "It is serious. It is serious because if I leave after tonight I'm gonna have to take back roads to get out of here," Poindexter added. www.wkbw.com/news/local-news/truck-drivers-make-final-push-to-leave-wny-before-nys-thruway-closuresSpectrum News just said that by Saturday North Country should have 4 to 5 feet of snow!!!!!!!! Food shortages will occur as trucks and commercial traffic banned from travel.

kion546.com/news/2022/11/17/several-feet-of-snow-could-batter-parts-of-upstate-new-york-as-officials-urge-residents-to-stay-off-dangerous-roads/And the worst is yet to come. The heaviest snow is expected to start Thursday evening and last through Friday, with more bouts of intense snow over the weekend, the weather service said. “This is going to be a very long-lasting and major lake-effect snow event east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario,” National Weather Service meteorologist Jon Hitchcock told CNN. At least 42 inches of snow are projected to pile up in Buffalo between Thursday evening and Sunday morning, forecasters said. Areas downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario could get hit with thunder and lightning on top of the snowfall. In addition to Buffalo, several feet of snow are forecast for the Watertown area of New York as well as northwest Pennsylvania, the National Weather Service said. The snow could fall at a rate of 3 inches per hour in some places, with snow piling up to 4 feet in some areas.

When I drove a truck I had two different experiences of being stuck on the Thruway in snow storms. One storm brought traffic to a halt just West of exit 54. We spent the night parked in the driving lane with snow accumulating overnight half way up the fuel tanks. I noticed after a while that the windows on a car next to me began to fog over and snow started to cover the windshield. It was an elderly couple and they ran out of gas. I had them come into my truck where we all stayed warm overnight, had hot coffee, TV, VCR, food, and a microwave. The couple huddled together on the bunk and I slept across the two seats with a cooler and a duffle bag filling the gap between them.
The second time I was stranded on the Thruway a storm blew in off the lake as I was leaving the Erie Pa area. By the time that I got to the Angola Service Area, normally about 1/2 hr West of Buffalo, it was snowing and blowing so hard that we were tiptoeing along with 4 ways flashing, trying to stay between the reflective marker posts. We were warned via CB radio by drivers going West of a traffic backup and an accident involving several tractor trailers off the road in the median and one rolled over and spilled it's load and blocked the traffic lanes so we got off at the service area. We were stuck there for several hours while they cleared up the wreck, plowed the road and got traffic moving again. thank goodness the whiteout conditions let up while we are stuck at the service area.
Travel along the South side of the Great Lakes is always a crapshoot. I was going West one time along the Indiana Toll Road. The sun was out and the grass was green but it was cold. East bound truckers said we needed to slow down at such and such mile marker because we were driving into a whiteout squall. I thought they had to be joking. Sure enough when I got to the mile marker mentioned, the road was snow covered and slippery, and visibility was horrible. We drove about 5 or 6 miles in that whiteout and drove back out to sunshine, bare roads, and green grass in the median again. It was not unusual for a trip from Utica area to the Chicago area or West to turn from an easy drive on bare roads into a white knuckle adventure.

WKTV just now said we could be part of this North Country storm by Sunday. I certainly hope not. I absolutely hate winter. But I am stuck in this damned North East Mohawk Valley New York State. On lighter note Hannaford Kellogg Mall had Turkeys on sale for 47 cents per pound. Shady Farm I am not sure of the name but have bought their ground turkey and it is good.

You should buy one, roast it and pick the meat off the bones and freeze it, then make a nice turkey soup with the carcass. We usually get a next day supper of leftover turkey and the trimmings, then I pick the bones and package some of the left over meat, and Kathy makes a soup. She makes a nice turkey tetrazzini at some point with some of the left over turkey that I haven't gobbled up in turkey sandwiches slathered with Hellman's. It is delicious. Turkey, mushrooms, cream of celery soup, celery, sour cream, grated parmesan and cooked egg noodles. She bakes it up with a nice crunchy topping of Ritz Crackers. I like that almost as much as the original turkey dinner. ( I remember the ingredients because she just had me shop for them in anticipation of left over Thanksgiving turkey.)

I made turkey tetrazinni last year with some of the leftover turkey, it was very good & I think I got the recipe from the food forum. I used to dislike winter, but not anymore. Considering the alternative I'll deal with it. If it's really bad out I put a pot of coffee on find something around here to keep me busy & hunker down. Plus, I don't have to get up at 0500 & head out in it to get to work.

I don't know if I saved their lives but it made for a much better night for all of us. It would have been a cold night for them for sure, and a boring night of alternately napping, and monitoring the situation on TV and the CB for me. We all stayed warm and enjoyed getting to know each other. We ate, chatted, and watched tv and eventually slept on and off. They were from Vermont. They were on their way back from seeing a newborn grandchild in Ohio. We exchanged Christmas cards and a couple of phone calls over the next couple of years and then Erma passed away. I heard from Bill one more time and then I heard no more and could not locate anyone that knew if he was alive or dead. I grew to assume that he too had died.
