I found a brown recluse spider in the garage today while I was moving some plastic totes around under my workbench. They have a nasty bite and a venom that can cause necrosis in some cases causing a wound that is hard to treat. The venom can cause large areas of necrotic or dying tissue.
The spider and it's web were on the bottom of the bench, stretched between a leg and the top Where I could have been bitten had I disturbed it while moving the totes. I am glad I found it when I did. It had an egg sack in the web and the internet tells me that they have up to 200 babies at a time.
We have all sorts of insects and miscellaneous critters here in the warm climate. Not long ago my neighbor killed a copper head that was hiding in his hedge when he went to trim it. Termites and ants are a real problem for some. We have a pest control service that comes every month or so and sprays around the base of the house and any place else that insects are a problem. I never worried about the garage but starting tomorrow Orkin will be adding the garage to the area covered. He is going to put out a couple of rodent bait stations also to catch the field mice that often come in the garage in winter. I have been catching them on sticky traps and I put decon around under the benches and in corners.
I used about a half a can of raid on that damned thing. I srayed mama until I was sure she was dead and then squashed burned the egg sack up with a Bernzamatic torch. When I moved the tote the spider came crawling out to the edge of it's web. It was the size of a half dollar. Gave me the creeps. I hate killing insects but I don't want any venomous critters running around in my shop.

When we first moved here Kathy found a black widow in our bathroom. That was when we started the monthly or bi-monthly pest control service.
