The leaves here in our area are finally beginning to show some fall color. It is no where near as pretty as in the Northeast. Mostly yellows, gold, and a bit of orange. I just came back from the store and I was noting as I drove that the mountains that are all around us are finally starting to color up, but as I came up our road, I noted that our huge maple in the front yard is the ONLY tree I saw on the entire 12 mile round trip that actually has all the bright reds and brilliant orange and gold color. The tree towers over the yard, and with our little white farm house it looks like something out of a Normal Rockwell painting. As you come up our road that brilliant display of color, shining in the morning sun is amazing.
It must be the species of maple that brings that brilliant color. We have another large maple in the yard on the far side of the driveway that simply turns yellow and brown before dropping it's leaves. When the tree guy comes to take down the walnut tree later this week I will have to ask him why there is such a difference.
It was easy to become complacent with the normal fall colors in upstate NY and we usually took a trip to Speculator, over the Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, and back down through Old Forge to Utica. We now are left to miss those rides around the horn, leaf peeping on a crisp fall day.

We're almost at peak here in CNY. I was out today running some errands & even in this area the colors are brilliant. I miss the maples that our neighbors had that were either knocked down in a storm or they had them removed for one reason or another. I miss sitting in the backyard relaxing just having my coffee on a day like today when they were in full color. A neighbor accross the road from us has a maple as you described, the leaves turn yellow & brown then drop.

I saw three rather large maple trees up in New Hartford at the beautiful veteran's memorial park the one with the large duck pond. The maples looked on fire. Some nice trees at Sangertown Mall/ In my backyard out my window the trees and bushes are just beginning to show off color.

As so the leaf season begins. I put the bagger on the tractor this morning and did just the front yard and part of the side yard and ended up dumping the double bins 9 times. That is jus the beginning. When the leaves REALLY start to drop I will only be able to go across the front lawn and back again once before the bags are stuffed full. If I had my way I would take down all but the pretty maple tree. When they all start coming down I spend 2 or 3 hours every other day and sometimes every day, mulching and dumping leaves across the road. Last year the pile was huge. About 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, and about 4 feet deep. I can't imagine how big the pile would be if the leaves weren't mulched up fine.
