I just searched for a local chapter on the internet and found that the program is alive and well here in Bristol. I am going to check into volunteering at some of their events. I love working with wood and this is an opportunity to put it to good use while providing beds for children in need. It looks like the beds are a simple design that is relatively easy to produce using basic wood working skills. I no longer volunteer at the food pantry distribution events and it seems like a good fit for me to try volunteering for this program. Hey, I am always up for anything that involves the hum of power tools and the smell of fresh cut wood. It seems that they recruit "teams" to work the events so I will have to investigate to see if they are interested in individuals that want to participate but are not affiliated with a group or team. I haven't been inclined to participate in that sort of thing in recent years due to the pandemic and the covid exposure possibility but this seems to be an opportunity to do the charity work and still maintain personal safety through distancing and a mask if necessary. I see photos all the time of kids sleeping on bare mattresses on the floor, or on the floor with no mattress. It kind of tugs at a person's heart strings to see kids in that sort of environment through no fault of their own. I can only imagine the joy it must bring to kids when they receive a bunk bed, a mattress and bedding.
