Taking a much looked forward to road trip today. We are meeting my oldest son for dinner in Dandridge Tn. He and his wife took a spontaneous weekend get-away trip to a smokey mountain cabin for the weekend to decompress after a stressful few weeks with his wife being in NY to care for her mother who has some health issues, and he being stuck in Ohio due to work responsibilities.
Do they still have Ruby Tuesday restaurants in the CNY area? Both Kathy and I as well as my son and his wife always loved Ruby Tuesday's garden bar and menu. The Ruby Tuesdays in both their area of Ohio as well as ours in Bristol Va. have closed.
We used to go there after bowling occasionally for a late night snack. They closed without warning. The poor employees showed up for work one Sunday to find a sign on the door stating that the location was closed permanently.
It is supposed to be a beautiful day to enjoy the 90mile ride and we haven't seen my son and his wife in over a year so it we are really looking forward to spending the afternoon with them.

I looked up the town your headed to and it is small with only Population: 3,162 (2020) Yes, Dandridge is but a small community about a mile off the interstate, but where we went is a large cluster of convenience stores, gas stations, and chain restaurants adjacent to the interstate interchange. I couldn't believe the gas mileage with our little car. We haven't made any significant interstate trips since we had the car. I got 36.5 mpg driving 68 on cruise control on a trip that was strictly interstate driving. We just got back. We spent 4 hours with them and then they had to head out. They had a 6 hour drive ahead of them back to St Marys Ohio near Lima.

I always like small population communities rather than large. One of the main reasons I never liked Utica. Way to many people. I loved Eureka and Pacific MO and they were very small communities at the time I was there. I used to hate having to come home to Utica on vacation. Some years I didn't. I love New York Mills. I should have moved here many years ago.

As much as I always enjoyed downtown Utica in my youth, my best and happiest days were when we moved to Newport and I attended West Canada Valley High School. I still enjoyed the shopping and entertainment venues in the city but could return to the friendly small town atmosphere of Newport. The local diner in the mornings before school, a soda fountain in Middleville called the chocolate shop that reminded one of a Happy Days set, for shakes and sundaes and a juke box (five tunes for a quarter) As an adult I found the best of both worlds living in places like Barneveld, Remsen, and on Kayuta Lake, while shopping and enjoying the restaurants in Utica and Rome.
When we moved here we preferred to live outside of the city and it's subdivisions after having lived in the duplex that Kathy shared with her mom on Herkimer Road will all the traffic and a Nice and Easy across the street. We are three miles from Bristol proper and three miles from Blountville, which is a small but growing unincorporated community about the size of Holland Patent. Even though it is an unincorporated town with a population of about 3,000, it is the county seat and home to the jail, courthouse and county offices. My mom and dad lived in an upscale subdivision and we looked at houses there, but we were not inclined to buy a house with other houses on all sides and a small 1/4 acre lot. We love having our neighbors 50 or 100 yards away and cows and deer across the road.

NY Mills has ALWAYS been a nice little town. I attribute it to the largely Polish influence over the years. NY Mills and the Polish neighborhoods in West Utica years ago always had well kept homes and lawns in which owners took enormous pride. The same was true of the predominantly Italian sections on the East end. Immigrant families all had an appreciation for the life they were building in the U.S, and took special pride in their homes and families. The other great influence in their lives was their religion and the Catholic church. My dad attended St Agnes all the way through the 8th grade before they moved to Whitesboro.

I went for a walk down Elm Street off Pulaski St and many or the houses are huge with perfect lawns. Luckily it was all downhill to Main Street then I caught the Bus to Utica. Nice walk. I have also walked down Buristown Road to Main Street to catch a Nus from there in any direction/ Nice walk and downhill. I want to do a uphill walk without carrying any groceries next. I noticed my legs are much improved since I have to climb stairs to my second floor due to no elevator which so far is a blessing. At first I had a problem buy stuck with it and have greatly improved to the point I do not have to hold the railing. Small blessing I accept. I love it here.

I don't have trouble with balance going UP a stair without holding the rail, but I DO prefer to hold the rail going DOWN a stairway or steps. We aren't as young and spry as we used to be PB. Be careful.

And we don't bounce as well. (meant as a reply to Clipper). I discovered that many years ago when I fell from a ladder and broke some ribs. A wise man named Dave gave me some very good advice. He was quite good at sharing his sage wisdom. He told me that when climbing never to let my butt get any higher than my shoulders are when standing on the ground. It works quite well. I never venture any higher than the second step on my 6 foot step ladder. I have a brand new 8 foot Werner fiberglass ladder that I bought for Kathy's nephew to use when he was putting new gutters on the garage and I have never been up that ladder at all.
