wcyb.com/news/local/widespread-flooding-reported-in-buchanan-countyWe were on alert all evening as storms moved around us dropping as much as 7 inches of rain in a period of a few short hours. We were under weather warnings all evening with frequent weather bulletins breaking into tv programming. Huge areas of red on the radar showed downpours that started early in the evening with 2 to 3 inches and ended with some areas of SW Virginia getting 7 inches. We watched as the storms headed our way and by about 9 o'clock it became evident that the main and most severe portions of the storms were moving just to our NW and to our South. We often seem to be sheltered from those type of systems for one reason or another. Severe and damaging storms often pass as close as 10 or 15 miles of us while we get simply the fringe effects and no significant damage. By the time we went to bed the rain was moving off to the East and we had only had a brief downpour and some drizzle. This morning there are photos of cars sitting in the business district on the main street of one SW Virginia town not too far from here with flood water over the hoods. Those mountain towns are often located along creeks in valleys and hollows between the mountains, and the roads in those areas often follow creeks or are on the side of a mountain, prone to mudslides and washouts. When the photos show cars on the main street and business district with water over the hoods I am sure that as the day goes on the reports will include businesses and homes in those areas either severely flood damaged or washed away.
