My sister and brother in-law brought us a dozen half moon cookies from Utica Bakery over in the Raleigh/Durham area. We enjoyed them but they were a far cry from Hemstrought's cookies of old. I just ate the last one with my coffee and it was far from fresh.
For some reason bakeries are not popular here. We only have one bakery in Bristol and their prices are beyond belief. I have only been there a couple of times in the last few years. I went one morning for a dozen donuts. They cost me $11 for 12 relatively small cake donuts. I bought Kathy an eclair while I was there. FOUR BUCKS! Surprisingly enough the place is always busy.
Thank goodness Kathy is a excellent baker and makes everything we need in the line of baked goods except donuts. We DO have a Dunkin Donuts in the Pinnacle shopping area but Dunkin can never compare to fresh donuts from Holland Farms and we seldom bother buying them. The donuts come in on a delivery truck. Who the hell knows where they are made or when they were made.

I'm not a Half Moon fan, but a couple of my friends who are said that the current Hemstrought Half Moons aren't as good as they used to be. I imagine the recipe changed when Hemstrought went to wholesale only. I suppose anybody can make a chocolate cookie with a brown and white frosting and call it a half moon. Things aren't what they used to be, that's for sure.

Walmart sells a similar cookie and they call it "black and white." No where near any reasonable facsimile of the old Hemstrought's. The last Hemstrought's half moons we had were not that good. Kathy loves half moons so when we come home we always buy them at Holland Farms. They are pretty good there.
