The Bristol Mall was rapidly abandoned by merchants after Penny's and Sears closed and the remaining anchor store, Belk's Department Store packed up and moved to the new and ever-growing Pinnacle shopping area out by the interstate.
The mall sat empty with grass growing up through cracks in the parking lot pavement while the city tried to find a new tenant for the property. At one point there was interest in locating a CBD manufacturing facility in the building but that fell through when Hard Rock Casino showed interest in the site when Virginia passed a bill to allow two casinos in the state. Bristol was selected to be one of the approved projects.
They have been very busy lately preparing for the opening of the temporary casino that will be open while the full casino and hotel are completed. It opens in July. The casino is expected to be a huge boost to an already very vibrant and successful tourist industry here, as well as bringing a huge transfusion of tax money to the city of Bristol Virginia's coffers.
I can envision such a project at Sangertown Mall but the New Hartford community probably would strongly object and vote it down, and who could blame them. Traffic is already a nightmare in that area and it would detract from the family oriented and community focused atmosphere of the village and town.
Kathy and I enjoy visiting casinos. When we come home we always visit Turning Stone a couple of times, and when we lived there we went to Foxwoods a few times. Since moving here we go to Cherokee N.C. once in a great while. We always set aside the money we are going to spend and if we lose it we leave. Having a casino here in town will give us a place to go for an occasional nice dinner in one of the restaurants and a couple hours of slot play.
Downtown merchants and local restaurants and hotels are excited and looking forward to the additional influx of tourist dollars that will be brought to the area by casino visitors.
