Coldest temperature in 2 years gives upstate NY the lowest in the lower 48 of USA!
by Meteorologist Peter HallSaturday, January 8th 2022 You read that correctly. Syracuse just had its coldest temperature in nearly two years with -2 degrees below zero! The last time Syracuse was colder than this morning was February 15th, 2020, nearly 2 years ago! That day it got down to -5 degrees below zero. Plus, one part of upstate New York just recorded the COLDEST temperature in nearly the whole country, most of Alaska included!!! It is not shown on the map below, but the Watertown International Airport located in Dexter, NY got all the way down to -25.6 degrees (BELOW ZERO)! A combination of a cold, Canadian airmass, plus clearing skies late last night and this morning across the North Country and parts of central New York, plus very light wind and a fresh snowpack from the recent lake effect snow caused a rapid fall in temperatures by early this morning. Since sections of the North Country had clear skies for a longer time and also had the benefit of cold air drainage from the Tug Hill Plateau and Adirondacks, those areas ended with arctic, frigid temperatures this morning. Here is a map of low temperatures this morning: cnycentral.com/news/local/coldest-temperature-in-2-years-gives-upstate-ny-the-lowest-in-the-usacnycentral.com/resources/media/7083c86b-6797-464c-af3d-adacd43df789-medium16x9_Mintemp.png?1641655476316Even Al is cold And the poor dog is cold and sick

Not a pretty sight out there now with freezing rain. Took 10 minutes to thaw out my windshield so I could run to WalMart for a couple 40 lb bags of ice melt.
Good day to chill out & the Xmas tree will come down today as it's shedding needles big time.

Not a pretty sight out there now with freezing rain. Took 10 minutes to thaw out my windshield so I could run to WalMart for a couple 40 lb bags of ice melt. Good day to chill out & the Xmas tree will come down today as it's shedding needles big time. I hope everyone is able to stay in and stay safe until roads are treated or it warms and things thaw off. I hate freezing rain. I don't know if anyone remembers the huge dip on the Newport Rd, just over the hill from Schuyler. I got stuck in the bottom of that dip one morning back in the 70's. It was when I first came home from the Navy and I was heading to Utica from Newport, went down the dip but couldn't make it up the other side. I was stuck there for about 1/2 hr or so until the sander came by. Just another day in the life of someone who lived in the North country. Now I live where even a THREAT of impending snow or ice, results in closings and delays, and when snow or ice DOES come, the world grinds to a halt and everything is closed or cancelled. I never thought the day would come when an inch or so of snow would keep me home, but I stay off the roads simply in order to avoid being hit by one of the many southern drivers who don't know enough to slow down. Just this past week when we had a couple inches of snow there was 41 accidents reported during the morning rush hour. It is like bumper cars when it gets slippery around here.
