Winter weather is making a return to the region. Towns surrounding Syracuse are getting hit with snow Sunday night. The snow is expected to accumulate in areas with higher elevations both north and south of the city of Syracuse.
Although some people prefer to spend time indoors during the cold winter months, others like to be outside taking advantage of the weather and activities.
Audrey Fowler from Tully enjoys skiing and snowboarding. She says “we’re ready to get on the slopes and on the trails.”
Tully resident John Casey loves the cold so much, he takes winter weather activities to a new level. “I love to swim in the lake in the winter time. I cut a hole and actually swim a couple times a week for 20 or 30 minutes,” he shares. This method is called the Wim Hof method, which can help boost your immune system.
Another Tully resident, Lucas Daly appreciates all four seasons. He says “there’s stuff to do in all seasons. There’s always something to do.”
Although winter activities may be fun, it’s also important to be prepared for the snow and cold weather.
If you are inclined to break out your swim trunks and cut a hole in the ice on Oneida Lake this winter so that you can take a "invigorating swim" go ahead, but be warned that when the ice fisherman see you bobbing about in the water they will probably sound the alarm and the cold water rescue team will show up in their insulated orange suits, drag you out of the water and put you in a warm ambulance. They may even suggest a thorough examination of your mental status. As for me? I will be the fat old man with the parka, scarfs, big fluffy mittens, and insulated boots, standing back watching. I would be heading to the diner for hot chocolate or coffee after watching.
AAA experts encourage people to always have at least half a tank of gas, drive with caution, allow yourself extra time on the road, have back up winter gear in your car and avoid cruise control when roads are slippery and wet.
Winterizing your car is also important during this time of year.
CNY Central’s weather authority team is working to keep you updated on weather conditions for the winter months ahead.
I am not surprised to see people who like winter happy to see it arrive. I understand skiers and snow mobile enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the arrival of enough snow to enjoy their chosen activities, but SWIMMING FOR 20-30 MINUTES IN A ICE COLD LAKE??? I shiver when I see the video of polar bear clubs doing their polar plunge thing, but swimming for 20-30 minutes. Yikes! I can't imagine that activity being healthy. A person's body would have to become quite hypothermic in much less time than that if immersed in water near freezing. I am not an expert when it comes to physiology, but I know that exposing bodies to extreme cold and hypothermia are something that we are advised to avoid.
Watch this video. I get cold walking the dog with winter clothes on. This guy is talking to you while immersed in a barrel of ice water surrounded by ice cubes. It made me cold just watching him.
