New York State Upstate NY man bursts into flames when police use Taser on him Updated: Nov. 06, 2021, 7:51 a.m. | Published: Nov. 06, 2021, 6:53 a.m.
By The Associated Press CATSKILL, N.Y. (AP) — An Upstate New York man was in grave condition at a hospital after police used a Taser to subdue him and he burst into flames, authorities said Friday. The Times Union of Albany reported that 29-year-old man walked into the Catskill village police department last weekend and got into a confrontation with officers. Chief Dave Darling confirmed to the newspaper that officers deployed a Taser to subdue the man, who had just doused himself with hand sanitizer, and the man then burst into flames. Darling said the officers were familiar with the man from previous encounters. “I think they were afraid he was going to hurt himself, and that’s what started it,” Darling said. “There are still details that we’re trying to develop.” The man was taken to the intensive care unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where he was in grave condition, the Times Union said. The police chief described the situation as “horrible” and said it was under investigation by the Greene County district attorney’s office. Kevin A. Luibrand, an attorney for the man’s family, declined to discuss details but said he had asked the police to preserve all recordings and written materials related to the encounter. Darling said that his officers are not equipped with body cameras but that there are video cameras in the police station. www.syracuse.com/state/2021/11/upstate-ny-man-bursts-into-flames-when-police-use-taser-on-him.htmlMust have shocked the poor police but at least we learned a great lesson from the accident. Tasing and alcohol do not mix!

The police can smell alcohol on your breath an hour after you drank it (and often give you a ticket for it). So why can't they smell it when a person right next to them is soaked in it? And why in God's name would they taze such a person?

And why in God's name would they taze such a person? That would be my first question also Kit. I an smell it from 20 feet away when someone puts just a small dab in their hand. Only time and investigation will tell if they were really in danger and actually needed to use the taser. What the hell. The guy was inside a police station. Would there not be enough cops there to subdue him without a taser?

A tragic story & hopefully heads will roll. Sounds to me like those cops knew this guy & had it in for him so they used the old taser routine, which may have cost him his life.

If he was a white guy nothing will come of it most likely. Luckily he wasn't black or some stores etc will be burnt and looted.
