I think the area has benefited by having the refugee center here. Over the past years the Russians and Bosnians have made their contributions. The people who come seem to appreciate the benefits of being an American more than those of us who were born here.

When I worked at the OD they had several Bosnian refugees working in the production department operating the insert machine and bundling machines. I had two working on the loading dock. They were the hardest working, dependable employees we had. One fellow finally learned to read and speak English well enough to move to delivering the bundles with a company truck. I promised him when he came to work for us that if he could read the road signs we would give him a delivery route,

Yes how true! Yesterday I was on South Street around Hannaford's and I saw an old Russian man I knew riding his bicycle toward Hannaford recycle center with three huge black garbage bags full of cans!! I remember talking with him a few years ago at the redemption center and him telling me he used to be a mechanic in the old country and today he collects cans. I bet he makes hundreds!
Taking a Bus around the Eagle Street to South Street area through East Utica which was home to many many Italian families with beautiful houses and yards and even vineyards has now been replaced with the Bosnians who have made a huge positive mark of this City. I wish we could have a Bosnian Mayor very soon.

And don't forget without the refugees we would not have Chobani Yogurt where all workers have a share in the profits. He is not Bosnian I think Afghan or Turkey.
The Medical Equipment supply was also started by them
The colored people in Utica could definitely learn from what the refugees have and are doing for the City. They have the drive and motivation to succeed. Even the Dominican women in particular join up with CENTRO as Bus drivers. The blacks seem to complain about racism holding them back when in fact is their communities lack of drive and motivation.
