Utica and Ithaca could be added to Syracuse's Congressional district in new proposal

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Central New Yorkers are getting their first look at new congressional lines that could impact voters for years to come. On Wednesday, the Independent Redistricting Commission released new proposed maps for congressional seats and state legislative districts. One proposal would add Utica and Ithaca to Syracuse's Congressional district.
The bipartisan commission released two sets of draft maps after failing to reach a bipartisan agreement. There is a lot on the line politically with Democrats scrambling to hang onto their super-narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
n 2014, New York voters approved reforms to try to keep politics out of the map drawing. One redistricting commissioner slammed the group's lack of consensus, saying this will only serve to spark confusion and urged his fellow commissioners to do better. "We're here at the behest of the people of New York who went through the difficult process of changing the constitution of the state to get rid of the gerrymandering of the past and to produce fair maps that are fair to all the residents of the state," said Charlie Nesbitt, a member of the Independent Redistricting Commission.
The first map called the "Letters Draft" would be favored by Democrats. The 24th Congressional district would be redrawn to include Utica and Ithaca which are Democratic strongholds. It also connects Schenectady and Binghamton.
