www.wktv.com/news/local/26469919.htmlWell this comes at a real big surprise......NOT. One more reason why we should stop doing events in other Countries. The US really needs to get more sufficient and stop relying or depending on other Countries. Maybe they would appreciate us more if we stopped all the extra aid we give to these Countries that do nothing for us.

I find this to be suspicious. My husband told me that Taiwan couldn't carry their flag into the ceremony last night. what is that all about?

Lucy, I was just having a little fun. Taiwan, formerly the island of Formosa , was where the provisional government of China ran when the Communists took over many years ago. The rebels were under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek My history is light in this area, but I think it was called Nationalist China and then the Republic of China. The PEOPLE"S Republic of China (mainland China) was held back from re-taking the island by the US for many years. Needless to say, Taiwan and the PRC are very much at odds with each other. You can look it all up on Wiki. Here's a good article on Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_ChinaTime for a more knowledgeable person to comment. 中華民国

You summed it up well, Dave. I might add that Chiang Kai-shek was the last elected leader of China and that even today, the Taiwanese government still claims to be the only valid Chinese government.
For years the US has stuck a finger in the Communists' eyes by 1) preventing the military takeover of Taiwan by the Communists and 2) agitating for Taiwan's admittance to the UN as a full nation member.
Only recently have we stopped introducing motions to the General Assembly for Taiwan's addmittance (China has veto rights in the Security Council). And it's pretty clear today that with 2 carrier task forces in the Persian Gulf, it is unlikely the US could prevent the Communists from succeding in a conventional assault on and takeover of Taiwan. It is only our nuclear arsenal that guarantees the individual freedoms of the Chinese people living in Taiwan. However, even that may come into question soon as the US comes to terms with the reality that we may not be able to guarantee those rights indefinitely.
