Is CNY seeing air quality alert days as a result of the smoky haze from the wild fires?
We have had a couple of days lately with a haze hanging over the area that triggered an alert for elderly and those with respiratory issues to stay inside as much as possible. Has it been an issue around the Mohawk valley?
When we have an air quality alert the city buses eliminate the fare for the day and shelters for the homeless that are ordinarily open at night and at meal time stay open all day. It was around 90 today and sunny. I played in my wood shop this morning for a while until it got too hot in the garage and begged out in front of the tube the rest of the day. The smoky haze was heavy enough to burn your throat and eyes at times the other day where we were at the foot of the Blue Ridge. It reminded me of the smog in the LA basin when I was stationed in Long Beach.

NWS reports air quality today for CNY as good. We are not currently getting smoke from western fires.

It got worse in NC than it did here. They had a couple of red alert days when the particulates in the smoke were heavy enough to cause a real problem for people with COPD and asthma. A friend in Asheville said that one of those mornings it was so thick you could smell it and it made his nose and throat burn. It was hanging in the morning mist. As soon as the sun came out it improved somewhat. Is it not a bit strange for the smoke to drift this far in a dense enough cloud to cause these problems? I don't recall ever hearing of it being this bad this far East.

NASA just posted a satellite pic of the smoke that is affecting the east coast including most of NYS., & it's ominous looking. There are massive fires all along the west coast & another one in British Columbia that they can't get under control. If the west coast & southwest don't get some substantial rain soon who knows what's going to happen. It's either that or plenty of mountain snow this winter will be there only salvation. Lake Mead has never been this low since Hoover Dam was built.

The smoke pretty well dissipated here for today and for a few days. Still here but not as bad. Toward the end of next week it is expected to be a problem again. I guess it has to do with the jet stream, cold fronts, warm fronts and all that sort of crap determining the direction it is going. I am not a weather man so I don't completely understand it. All I know is that our weather usually either comes out of the West or up from the gulf. If the driveway is wet and there is water dripping from the eaves on the carport it is raining. If it is dry it's not. That is about the extent of my knowledge of meteorology.

Same here. All I know is that it rained here overnite, it's sunny here now, about 80*, a bit humid & with all the rain we've had my lawn needs to be mowed again.

News just now confirms the haze in the air is from the smoke from the wild fires. People sensitive should stay indoors.

Wow I went for a walk this early evening and I think I overdid it what with the air quality outside and inside so I am on my oxygen now. If it is not one think it's another.

Be careful PB. Kathy has been staying inside for the most part. Between the heat and the poor air quality she has a hard time if outside for any significant amount of time. Do you have a portable oxygen accumulator to carry on your expeditions to Walmart and to use while standing around in the heat waiting for buses both ways.
