lite987.com/patio-drive-in-of-utica-for-sale/I hope that the recipe for the chili sauce used on the Patio's awesome chili dogs goes along with the sale of the restaurant. I have been eating and loving those chili dogs since the 1960's when I hung around with Tony Raffule, the son of then owner, Ike Raffule. Through the years I watched Tony and his wife Gloria take over the business, sell or lease it to someone else, move to Florida, only to return and run it again. Even after they finally retired and sold it again, I continued to stop in on every trip to the area for my "fix" of two chili dogs and fries. It will always remember stopping in over the years and sitting at the counter where I could chat with Tony as he stood over the grill, rolling those Hoffman franks on the grill, grilling the buns, and ladling on that famous chili sauce. I remember stopping in once when Tony was still in high school and he was in the back peeling and dicing a 50lb sack of onions with which his dad would make the sauce. That's how long I have been enjoying those wonderful chili dogs. I pray that whoever buys the restaurant will continue to sell the top quality grilled hot dog with that famous, one of a kind, chili sauce that I have been enjoying for 54 yrs since I was in my late teens.

It is on Oriskany St. West. I am not sure what is across the street from it now, but there used to be a playground. On the corner of the little street that crosses the tracks by the old Anchor Inn. It has always had a 50's-60's vibe and the food is great.

I think it was across the street from the old tire factory. Dick, the tire factory (the old Dunlop) is up the road a ways. Patio is on the corner of Platt St. Between Erie and Oriskany. There used to be a playground across the road between Oriskany and the tracks. One of the last summers before we moved I drove for Freddie Burrows for a while. We were dumping hard fill in that location to bring it up level with Oriskany St. I almost think they may have built a Dollar General there but I could be mistaken. On the SE corner of that intersection there used to be a gun shop. I don't know if that is still there either.

www.facebook.com/ThePatioDriveIn/Not artery friendly, but it was a summer tradition every place I worked in Utica. Once a week someone would come by and say, "We're making a Patio run, what do you want?" It was all take out so whoever made the run would bring it back and we would eat in the company cafeteria.

I heard ya CB, and I have changed my diet significantly since my heart issues prompted me to modify my eating habits. With that being said, there is no way I can come to Utica and not have a good haddock fish fry, either Joe's Pizza or O'scuinizzo's, and a couple of Patio Drive-in chili dogs. I have already decided that we would skip the 20 ounce prime rib at the casino and the hot fudge sundae at Nicky Doodles.

Nicky Doodles is closed in N.Utica but the one in New Hartford & Rome is still open, I think. They make a darn good double cheeseburger, at least the N.Utica stand did. Good ice cream also.

We normally patronized the Verona stand between Verona and Oneida Castle on 365. My son and wife and my grand daughters live in Sherrill and taking the girls for ice cream is always on the agenda. I will have to settle for a small cone of low fat frozen yogurt instead of the sundae.
Didn't I just read recently that some new business was going into that location?
