April first was always an eagerly awaited event when I lived in upstate NY. The opening of trout season usually found me along the banks of one of my favorite streams regardless of what the weather happened to be. I have fished on opening day in a ski parka, long johns, and snowmobile boots and I have fished in a flannel shirt and sneakers. I ALWAYS scheduled day off to fish on opening day of trout season, walleye season, bass season, as well as opening day of deer season, both northern zone and southern zone.
Yep, on April fool's day I was always that fool freezing my butt off, standing in the rain or snow, traveling from one fishing hole to another, ranging anywhere from Oriskany Falls to Point Rock, Port Leyden, Wilmurt, or McKeever, determined to end the day with a fresh trout sizzling in butter in a skillet.
I seldom fish any more. The trout fishing spots here are limited and often crowded with fisherman. Bass fishing is good but you need a boat to fish the best spots with the high and steep banks along much of the shoreline of the TVA lakes.
I will be buying my fishing license today in anticipation of fulfilling the promise I made to my little buddy Nathan to take him fishing but we won't be going today. It is expected to only reach 42 today with a chance of flurries in the higher elevations, but starting on Saturday the weather is going to be clear and warming back into the 70's by early next week. We thinner blooded southerners don't engage in much outside activity unless the temperatures are above 50, and preferably above 60. Nathan's mom married a guy with two older boys and their dad takes them fishing but leaves Nathan at home. Outfitting the little guy with a rod, reel and a stocked tackle box put a huge heart warming smile on that boy's face. I can't wait to see the smile when he catches his first fish that is big enough to cook and eat. I have told him about fishing in Minnesota and eating shore dinner, cooked in a cast iron skillet over an open fire. That put an even larger smile on his face. He asked me if we could bring a skillet, "just in case" lol. His grandpa is a good friend that we bowl with on Thursday nights. The retired head tax accountant for a coal company and has never fished either. Hmmm. Maybe I can recruit a second student and teach gramps to fish too, and maybe it will spawn a renewed interest in me to get back to fishing more often.
