I was very glad I didn't wake up in CNY this morning after reading about the heavy snowfall in the Northeast and seeing the photos of the snow. lite987.com/stay-off-of-utica-and-rome-roads-if-possible/Ironically WE are being cautioned to drive with extreme care this morning. We had about ONE INCH of snow last night. When we left the restaurant last night about 6 a dusting of snow was on the grass and vehicles in the parking lot but it wasn't sticking on the road yet. It had been a wet mix of snow and rain with the temperature hanging around 25 or 27 degrees. The step bars on the truck were ice covered and I had to help Kathy into the truck. The roads were bare all the way home with the exception of bridges and a few isolated places where the passing lane was a little snotty. Even after being here for almost 20 yrs I still am left shaking my head when I watch them deal with snow. Our road had less than an inch when I went to bed, with bare tracks where cars were driving. At 1:30 this morning the plow went by with the blade down, and again at 6:30 this morning. They must spend a lot of money on replacement plow edges, plowing all that bare blacktop at 40 mph several times a day. Our grass is barely covered, you can still see the brick pattern on our patio through the snow, and our driveway is bare for the most part. The TV news folks are advising people to be careful if they have to drive this morning. DUH! I am careful when I drive even in summer. If I go out I will be careful. Careful not to ass end some white knuckle southerner driving 15 mph in a 55 zone, haha.

Make a BIG pot of coffee, and take lots of breaks to rest your abdominal muscles and back. Drink a cup before ya go out, and pour a cup in each boot to keep your fee warm.

I cancelled my Doctor's appointment. Was to be a physical exam that can wait I hate dressing up coat, scarf, hat, gloves then dragging my butt through cold and wind and wet crappy snow then having to undress and then do it all over again. No appointment till April. Good enough for me.

With the new snowblower it's a breeze now. Only thing I have to shovel is the length next to the truck to get it. I'm really surprised at this little machine. I should have invested in a battery operated one, but couldn't see fronting that much money.

We had about 8 inches. Had a fun day. On the way over to Aldis on Oriskany Blvd this morning headed east I must have hit a patch of ice because I nearly lost the truck. Just about did a 360 with the truck swerving from one lane to the other. Luckily there were no other vehicles around & if my truck didn't have traction control I no doubt would have ended up on the guard rails. Got to the store & back home in one piece. Fired up the snowblower & the impeller was froze. Winter in CNY. LOL

I had the impeller freeze a couple of times when I lived up North. Had to use a hair dryer to thaw it out, and once it was so cold that I cautiously used a torch. Once when it was about 20 below and the truck I had at the time wouldn't start I resorted to lighting a charcoal fire the round pan from a table top grill, sliding it under the oil pan and putting a tarp over the front of the truck for about 15 minutes. I sure don't miss winter in CNY. I froze my ass off on the loading dock at the OD many a night when it was below zero. The overhead doors had to be open with the trucks backing in to load their bundles. I had an office with windows overlooking the conveyors and the dock but in that fast moving environment with bundles coming to the dock almost end to end on two conveyors it was necessary for me to supervise from down on the dock many times.

I have had the unpleasant experience of doing a 360 on Rt 49 between Marcy and Rome once night BHU. I had a Bronco II for a short time as my winter rat years ago. It was such a short wheel base that if it started to go you were gone before you could do much about it. I did that 360 that night, ended up in the left lane facing traffic. I put that sucker up for sale and went back to driving my full size pickup.
Gee, I was just thinking. I have not had to have a winter rat since we moved here. Hmmm.

I saw an accident involving a small sport car on Main Street next to the Fitness Center. Car slid and ended up sideways on a hill of freshly plowed snow. Both young people ( from what I could observe) were out of the car and one was making a call so I believe they were ok.

I has a winter rat that I drove all year for 4 years. One afternoon it just up and died on the Thruway returning from Syracuse. Had to put poor Nellie down. Yup shot her right between the headlights.

I used a heat gun to thaw it out. The truck hasen't failed me yet starting in winter. I use synthetic oil which doesn't turn into molases.

I've owned my share of winter rats. Drove them year round.
