Vaccines at Tennessee Pharmacies

We recently discussed the idea that pharmacies would be administering the vaccines. I said none here were going to give any in the immediate future. Today they proved me wrong. They have one pharmacy not far from here will be giving the vaccinations. They are expected to 100 doses a week for now.

The state also announced that three major pharmacy chains in the NW Tennessee and SW Virginia area will begin receiving vaccine. One chain will be getting 200 doses a week per store and the other two will get 300 doses for now for the stores approved to be vaccination sites. Imagine that they are speaking of CVS and Walgreen's for sure and I have no idea what the third chain will be. Probably Walmart or one of the supermarket chains that have pharmacies.

I was asking the cardiologist about my getting the vaccine while I was at his office today for a routine check up. He concurred with our primary care doctors that we should wait 90 days. That is the present recommended wait time here locally. I don't know if that is a local recommendation or from CDC.

I had been having frequent bleeding from the backs of my hands when I just bump them on anything. The skin is thin and even putting on my watch or putting my hand in my pocket can peel or take a gouge out of the skin where it covers the bruises from my Eliquis blood thinner and Plavix. He told me when I use up what Plavix I have now, and then to discontinue it and take a baby aspirin instead. Bruising is a side effect of either Eliquis OR Plavix and taking both of them has exacerbated it and increased the bruising and bleeding. When I am working in my shop I can just get a miniscule scratch or knick and not even notice until the blood is dripping off the end of my fingers. I run around with a half a bottle of New Skin on the back of my left hand most of the time. It will be a year on February 21st since I had the heart attack.

It looks like you're good to go with the vaccine once the 90 days is up. Good news. Hopefully you won't have to wait long in the pharmacy if that's where you go for the shot. My Mom used to take a blood thinner I think it was Warfarin. She had some of the same issues you're having though not as severe. Not fun.

My mom took coumadin. I an glad I don't have to take that stuff. Mom used to have to go have her blood drawn pretty often to check the coumadin level. I would hope that if a doctor prescribes a rat poison for a blood thinner he damned well SHOULD keep close track of the levels.

I have taken Eliquis for several years now, but the Plavix was prescribed specifically to prevent platelets from clogging the stent and causing a clot. the combination of the two caused my blood to be TOO thin. They recommend taking the Plavix or Brilinta for a year after a heart attack. February 21st will be a year since the incident.

My main concern wasn't the bruising. It was a worry that with my blood that thin if I fell or hit my head I could have a brain bleed that would leave me eating dirt and looking at the grass from the bottom side.

I don't worry so much about me getting the vaccine at 74, but Kathy is 82 and has some health issues. My health is much better than hers even with the heart issue. We were lucky that she survived the first bout. If it CAN be contracted a second time or if one of the new variants can be contracted even after having the virus once, they say that the vaccine at a minimum would lessen the symptoms and keep a person out of the hospital and keep them from dying. She needs to get the vaccine without having to wait for 4 or 5 hours.

That's what my Mom took, Coumadin. She'd be cooking or whatever, cut her finger & have to hold a towel on the cut till the bleeding stopped. And lab work was frequent to check her levels. There's no excuse for making the elderly stand in line for 4-5 hours to get the shot. Some of these places don't even have bathroom facilities. I wouldn't want to do it. I get antsy waiting in line at a grocery store. No patience. I wonder how they're going to get people who are homebound immunized.

That is the problem with the site here at the speedway. They line up for 3 miles along the road and the only john is a porta potty in the speedway parking lot where the shots are given. They are probably afraid a john would spread the virus.

Is it possible to have your doctor call ahead for Kathy? Perhaps there is some type of special dispensing for the disabled or they could come to your vehicle or your home? It's worth a try.

There have been few exceptions made that I have heard about. I chatted with a cashier at the grocery store one day who had spent her entire day off getting her 101 yr old father through the 3 or 4 hour wait in line to get him vaccinated. I am going to keep an eye on the process when the pharmacies start giving the vaccine. At least there you can make an appointment. I have a close friend that is a manager at a Walgreen's store. He will probably be able to get us onto the list when she is ready and get us taken care of in a timely manner. I think she falls under category 1a being 82 and with respiratory issues due to COPD.

That is good, your process through this miasmic stew. Here in Utica I heard9 but can't speak to it) that RCIL (resource Center for Independent Living) is making exemptions for some of those severely disabled and in group homes. These folks live in congregate housing, not in nursing homes, many are bedridden and or wheel chair bound. Also, your county should have a Department of Aging (Federally mandated) that should be able to help you. These folks deal with problems like this all the time. At least up here, (all I really know about) they are very responsive. I wish both of you well.

I hadn't though about the local office for the aging. Thanks artsyone. New options to investigate. We still have about 2 months before they recommend vaccinating but I can get and early start and nail down an option for her.
