wcyb.com/news/local/abingdon-virginia-teen-killed-by-grenade-likely-sold-in-nc-storeI have seen to old WWII "pineapples" for sale at flea markets myself and often wondered if any of them slipped through still armed and loaded. This kid bought the grenade at a flea market in Shallotte NC. That is where one of Kathy's cousins lives. We have been there and camped at a KOA there a couple of times. Once to visit her cousin and again while visiting Myrtle Beach. Shallotte is only a half hour drive from the beach. Her cousin and I went to that same flea market one Sunday morning to browse the tool vendors and gun dealers. It is not legal anymore for guns to be sold at flea markets. the dealer where I bought ammo this morning is a dealer and can sell you a gun but he can't display or sell them in his booth at the flea market or on flea market property. I find that reasonable but on the other hand it is legal to buy and sell guns at gun shows. I go to a gun show every year in Kingsport at a convention center where there are over 100 vendors selling every kind of weapon you can think of, and THAT is legal. Go figure. When I was at the gun shop this morning he had one of those signs with a hand grenade on it, labeled "complaint dept. Pull pin for service." He said he has had it there for years but he now has second thoughts and is going to call the sheriff's department and have them take it and dispose of it just in case it might be loaded. What a tragedy. The medical examiner said the boy died from shrapnel wounds to his face, torso and extremities.
