58 degrees here at the house. I am headed out to crank the country tunes and work in my woodshop. Sun is out, and the skies are blue. Much better than last weeks snow and low temperatures..
Working on building a flag box for a friend that just lost his father to covid a week ago. I was surprised that the funeral home didn't give him one. I cut all the pieces a few days ago and began sanding them. Today I will give them a final sanding with a 320 grit paper and assemble the flag box. Glue, brads, and clamp it in a jig to dry.
I also have about a half a garbage can of planer shavings to clean up and a pile of sawdust around the table saw from processing some more of the red oak the other day.
Enjoy your day. Stay well and stay safe.

nice cold NY day. I cook for my neighbors: I have 2 neighbors who are disabled: one is visually impaired and the other is elderly and on O2. So, we all put in $$ and I buy the food and prepare it and parcel it out and everybody eats. For Thanksgiving I made a 17 lb turkey, stuffing, cranberries and another girl made squash and potatoes. Then the next week I made soup. This week for Christmas I made brown sugar ham, and today I made a hearty ham and bean soup and corn bread. I have turned my kitchen into a mini catering service. Next week I want to make roast chickens in the French style. They are wonderful. I am totally engrossed in these recipes. Just call me the barefoot Irishwoman!

God bless you for caring for your disabled neighbors. That is very kind and generous and something different to occupy your time during this damned pandemic. What a nice idea to join together and share the cooking and to take it to shut-ins.
What is French style roasted chicken?
There is nothing like a nice hearty hot soup on a cold day and it is relatively inexpensive way to repurpose left overs. We have a shank portion ham that I bought on sale to use on Christmas day but with both of us having covid and Kathy just now recovering we cancelled dinner with the neighbors that usually join us for holiday meals. I love bean soup and cornbread. Soup beans and cornbread are a staple here in the Southeast. EVERYONE makes it and eats it. You can even buy bean soup in take-out cup at a convenience store at lunch time and get a piece of cornbread as a side instead of crackers.
Friends brought in food for us when Kathy first came home. Two different friends brought ham. One brought slices of a spiral ham and the other brought a small boneless ham. We finished off the ham yesterday in scalloped potatoes. I don't know what she has planned for New Years day but it will not be ham. We are about hammed out for now. I bought a pork butt roast today. Maybe we will cook that on New Years day.
Let me know how "French roasted chicken" is prepared. Thanks.

We'll do a boneless ham for N.Y. Day along with the lasagna. The leftover ham we'll use for a good hearty breakfast of ham & eggs, & scalloped potatoes for dinner next week. We made a turkey breast for Xmas that we had in the freezer. I've had enough turkey to last me a long time.

It got up to the mid fifties again today and I had the flag box all sanded and prepped for finish. Unfortunately it rained and was damp and dank all day today. I put a coat of Mahogany gel stain on it and rubbed it in. I will put another coat of the gel stain on in the morning but it will take another 24 hours to be dry enough to put the first coat of polyurethane on it.

It is peaceful when the snow is falling lightly and all is quiet like that. When I lived on Kayuta Lake we could sit at our dining room table next to the sliding doors to the deck and watch the deer come up the bank from the lake and feed from our feeder and manger. On a moonlit night we could watch them come from the house across the lake, across the ice and up the bank to our feeder. We had motion lights on the back of the house and the lights didn't seem to bother them when they came on.

God bless you also. I have a few nice memories of watching a snowfall that was like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, but TOO many memories of shoveling that crap and trying to get to work, driving through it, haha.

So much for warm and balmy. Winter is back. Only going into the 40s for the foreseeable future. That is warm for the North, and not really raw here but damned chilly and uncomfortable.
I am off to pay some bills and do some shopping, with mask and hand sanitizer at the ready.
Have a good day. Stay safe and stay warm.
