Two years ago today we woke up to 10-12 inches of snow. I had to slog through it all the way to the storage building, get out the snow shovel, shake the dust and cobwebs off of it, and shovel the walk and driveway for only the second time since moving here in 2002.
No snow today but it was only 23 when I got up and only going to 40 today. Better tomorrow. It will be in the 50's.

We got less then 1" of snow here & the temp is 32* according to our outdoor thermometer. It won't last with temps near 50 this weekend. Unless the weather patterns change we may be headed for a green Xmas this year in the M.V. I think the north country has a few inches on the ground but not enough for the snowmobile riders.

It actually got up in the 50's around noon. I started breaking down those solid oak pallets and re-sawing some of the 4x4's into 2x4 and 1x4 boards. I was pleasantly surprised to find when I re-sawed it that it is beautiful red oak. Red oak 1x4x6foot at Home Depot is $24.73 and I am getting 5 4 foot 4x4's from each pallet's cross pieces plus whatever I salvage from the 10 footers. What a jackpot. I will get about $100 worth of finished furniture grade wood out of each pallet just from the 4 ft cross pieces. I am contemplating just cutting the 10 footers into a 6 footer and a 4 footer from each piece. I won't have to buy any finish lumber for my smaller projects for quite a while. I can make an awful lot of cutting boards and jewelry boxes and book shelves out of all that red oak and it isn't costing me a dime. I haven't done the math but I think I have over 2 grand worth of red oak when I am done processing and running it all through the planer. I am really excited. It is not unusual for me to spend 50 or 60 bucks on finish hardwood. I still have some of the first pallet to cut up and two more to do yet. It is a pretty time consuming process to re-saw it on the table saw.
Wait until I start running it through the planer several times, taking off 1/32 of an inch on each pass. Looks like I will be able to keep myself busy for quite some time. So much for being bored and looking for something to occupy my time, haha.
Next I will grab a few free clean softwood pallets to plane up for birdhouses and kids toys. I won't have to visit Lowes or Home Depot for wood for quite some time. The planer will pay for itself several times over just on these oak pallets.

Past two days have been very cold for me. What with traveling by Bus and having to wait for another Bus connection winter is not a fun time for me. I don't know what I did this morning but I had every intention of taking the Gennesee St Bus to Kellogg Mall since I thought Hannaford might have white tea. I just cannot kind it any where . Well anyway i had to buy a Bus Pass and right now they are not sold by a human in the office for they can't get a human to do the job!. So I used their ticket machine which I have used in the past with no problem. This time when I inserted my debit card nothing happened. I di it twice and the Bus arrived and I was so afraid I would have to wait in the cold for the next Bus which would have been and hour wait. So anyway I ended up buying just one ticket and paid cash I am lucky I had $7.50 on me at the time. Well apparently I was so flustered by this episode that took place that I got on the wrong Bus and didn't even realize it till I got to New York Mills and said to myself. This is not New Hartford!!!!!. So I went into Walmart bought my jello and Magnesium pills. Grabbed the Burrstone Bus at 12:40 PM and headed back to the Hub. So I get to the hub and the next Kellogg Mall Bus would be a half hour away. I went home instead............. What a day!!!!! I hope that immature drug addict that I thought I got away from does not knock on my door again like he did this morning so early. It throws my day off. What a jerk...

Gee whiz. Sounds like a VERY bad day to me. I would not have the determination that you have for getting out every day and staying active while having to use public transportation and stand in the cold. Who is knocking on your door in the early morn? That rude meth head that used to pollute your air supply in the old apartment? We have a box of white tea bags for when my sister stops by for tea and a chat. I bought it at Walmart. It is by Twinings of London. The box says "pure white tea." I am not a tea drinker other than my green tea that Kathy makes sun tea with in summer and I buy in bottles by Lipton so I don't know if that is a brand or variety you are looking for. I went on line and found the link for that brand at Walmart. www.walmart.com/ip/Twinings-of-London-Fujian-Chinese-Pure-White-Tea-Box-of-20-Tea-Bags/456269040?.

A lot of the stuff sold in big box stores now is crap, mostly particle board.

So far I have only made a few and gave them away to friends. It is a very time consuming process making tight fitting box joints on my router table. Sanding to a fine finish is also a process requiring several sandings with increasingly fine papers until the proper smoothness is achieved to get a quality finish to stain and polyurethane or varnish. Next comes applying several coats of the finish, requiring fine sanding or steel wool rubbing between coats. It can take up to a week or more, working on a box for a period of time every day until the finished product is stained and finished and ready to be used. So far I have only made one box at a time. I hope to be able to make multiple boxes at a time at some point. It will be quite some time before I will be making jewelry boxes in a quantity practical for sale on line or at a flea market or craft show.
I tend to focus most on less complicated and more primitive projects such as the toys for kids, bird feeders, bird houses, book shelves, spice racks and so on. The level of concentration for jewelry boxes and finer finishes requires me to be in the mood and mindset to have the necessary patience to actually enjoy the project. At the present time I am not able to do the finishing on that sort of project until I can get a wood stove hooked up to keep the shop in the 60's and 70's in order to properly cure and hand rub the higher quality and finer finishes. I can make the boxes or whatever in winter but have to wait for proper temperatures to do the finish. Kathy won't let me do that sort of thing in the kitchen, haha.
I love working in my shop. I woke up this morning thinking about all that beautiful red oak wood that I now have to work with. I felt like a kid that had a visit from Santa Clause. With this pandemic crap keeping us isolated I am fortunate to have the shop and tools, and to enjoy the hobby as much as I do.

He is up there smokin away this morning cause he keeps all windows open plus an exhaust fan and now the smell gets sucked into my apartment through the heat pump outside vents. I can't win. Once again today he knocked on door and then again banged on the vent to the heat pump outside bedroom window.

If it continues you should be able to file for and get an order of protection filed against him. At the very least one would think that a call to the police would result in them giving him a verbal warning to leave you alone and cease the harassment.

I set up the new planer today and planed some of the re-sawn oak. The grain is absolutely beautiful on what I have processed so far. The discharge on the machine points straight out horizontally from side of the machine. You can either hook up a dust collector or put an elbow on it to direct it down into a container. That thing turns 8500 rpm so it will sling the waste quite a ways if you don't have it directed into a container. With just what I planed today, I filled a tall kitchen waste can to the brim, emptied it and half filled it again. I guess I will have to give the shavings to my farmer friend to use for bedding his calves or to put on the floor in the chicken coop. I am really thrilled with it. I re-sawed some of the 4x4 into 2x4, and today I re-sawed some of the 2x4 into 1x4. The grain and color in that recycled pallet wood is absolutely awesome.

If he's on meth he'll either steal from you or get violent. Good luck.
