Running out of room: St. Louis hospitals forced to turn away patients from rural areas as COVID cases soar HOUSTON, Mo. — A 48-year-old married father of five, worried about his worsening headaches, walked Monday afternoon into the small emergency room at Texas County Memorial Hospital. Nurses discovered he had a quickly growing and dangerous mass in the middle of his brain, said hospital CEO Wesley Murray. The man needed surgery at a high-level trauma center. For the next 25 hours, frantic nurses called every Missouri health center they could. They even called hospitals as far as Memphis, Tennessee; Little Rock, Arkansas; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Omaha, Nebraska, Murray said, but they were unable to find an intensive care bed open. The man was losing consciousness. His blood pressure was increasing. Finally, a University of Iowa hospital was able to handle his case, sending a small plane to pick him up at nearby Fort Leonard Wood. The nurses cried when they learned the surgery was successful and the man has no impairments, Murray said. But the close call was unnerving. “That is just one incident, and our worst and latest incident of everything kind of grinding to a halt,” he said. “Because of the spread of COVID and so many ICU (intensive care unit) beds taken, there are no beds available for the critically and dangerously ill patients.” ‘Heat of the battle’ www.stltoday.com/news/local/state-and-regional/running-out-of-room-st-louis-hospitals-forced-to-turn-away-patients-from-rural-areas/article_0e17fc93-3e67-5a49-9a33-0b346618b5c3.htmlThis will spread unless people get serious about this damn virus

The number of daily cases has doubled since Election Day & November is only half way gone. Today some QANON idiot just elected to the House came out against wearing a mask. The recklessness & stupidy of some public officials who are playing Russian Roulette with people's lives is the reason we're in this situation.

Meanwhile Gov Cuomo believes we should have a second review of the vaccine by a panel he has yet to create and delay any distribution until Biden is inaugurated.

It would be great if there were any adults in the room.

Did you catch the news blurb by Trump. He made his grad appearance from hiding and also announced that New York State will not have any shipments of COVID vaccine sent to us. Imagine that... what an idiot. Apparently he is upset with Cuomo and the drug company in NYS.

The pissing contest rolls on between Cuomo and Trump, but what he said was that the vaccine wouldn't be shipped to NY until he was sure it would be distributed and used without delay. Just some more misconstrued info being intentionally taken out of context and published by anti-Trump media.

Trump has been lying & sandbagging the response to this pandemic since day one & he had the gall to critisize Cuomo? He had nothing to do with Pziser developing this virus, they have not taken a nickel from the Federal Govt., but he's up there running his big mouth yesterday trying to take some credit. N.Y.S. will get the virus the same time everyone else does, I guarantee it, despite Trump's usual temper tantrums & vindictiveness. He learned nothing from Biden beating his ass last week. Pziser will ship the vaccine to N.Y.S. & there isn't a thing Herr Trump can do about it. Btw, I'm no fan of Cuomo either but he did a better job responding to this pandemic then Trump ever dreamed of.

I think the Feds bankrolled the production of promising vaccine candidates before the testing was completed. I was very skeptical of that idea but it looks like it may pay off. They own the stuff in production now. If Cuomo wants to order some on his own, he needs to place his order now. Of course NY has no money to do that and Cuomo chose not to participate in the distribution planning and NY has not yet approved any vaccines so what does it matter.
I like to imagine a special room in purgatory where Trump and Cuomo are locked in a room together and we get to throw disgusting things at them.

I don't think we need cops, PB. We need people to start thinking of others & govt assistance to prop up these small businesses who will go under if another shutdown is in order. The problem is there is no leadership coming out of Washington because certain political leaders don't want to spend the money. Right now there is a food line in Texas with people waiting in a food line that is a mile long. It's a disgrace that the wealthiest Country in the history of modern civilization has people waiting in a mile long food line during a pandemic. The Utica Food Bank may not have enough turkeys to give away for Thanksgiving. So next week I'm going shopping to pick up a couple birds to help out. I just have to find out where the drop off is located.

God bless you BHU. There is a lot of satisfaction and a warm feeling in donating food to someone in need. It is ironic that Kathy and I will be eating a turkey breast, but we will be putting whole turkeys in the two food boxes we do every Thanksgiving and Christmas. We just have an overload of turkey breasts that need to be eaten before they get old. For $25 bucks each for the two boxes it is a small donation that means quite a bit to the families that they go to. If Kathy and I don't know anyone personally my sister usually knows someone from her church that is out of work or otherwise in need of help during the holidays. We are blessed and thankful for the means to be able to share and it is a heart warming feeling to sit down to a holiday dinner and to know that for $25 each there is two other families with kids sitting down to a dinner. We usually include a turkey, a bag of spuds, stuffing mix, a can of yams, cranberry sauce, and maybe a canned vegetable. Kathy usually adds a home made pie to the mix. We have been doing the boxes ever since we moved here in 2002. It started with a family that was struggling. The guy had been mowing my mom and dad's lawn before I came here. He was out of work and was barely making the rent by mowing lawns during the day and doing janitorial cleaning under the table for minimum wage at night. Kathy and I were just saying tonight that I need to shop for the boxes this coming week. Our freezer is full to the door so I couldn't buy the turkeys the other day when they were on sale so cheap.
With all the unemployment as a result of the pandemic, we are just going to have my sis take the boxes and her pastor will give them to someone who needs them.

I found out that the drop off is located at the central fire station on Bleeker St so tomorrow I'll grab a couple turkeys & a few other items & head over there. In years past Hannaford on Commercial Dr. had a drop box inside the store this time of year for customers who wanted to donate non perishable food items for the needy. I would always toss in a couple items. I was in there the other day & no box. Don't know why.

I can't imagine any legitimate reason for not having a box for donations at Hannaford. Maybe something to do with the virus. Our local markets, both Kroger and Food City have boxes of non-perishables already packed that you can buy for $10. I don't do it often, but maybe every other month I buy one. My neighbor is the manager of a local Food City. He says that they donate about 2-3 hundred of those boxes a month and that is just from his store. There are five of their stores between Bristol Tn and Bristol Va.
When we lived up there I used to buy a turkey each thanksgiving and Christmas and donate them to the Rescue Mission. Back then there was not a food pantry or soup kitchen on every corner. It is very sad how many families now a days would go without proper food if not for the charitable open doors of those kitchens.
I think God guides us toward the needs of those places and those people that patronize them. We can't donate to each and every one, but it certainly is a good feeling when we are able to contribute. We have a Haven of Rest shelter here, as well as a Salvation Army shelter. I have never donated food there, but in the heat of summer I try to buy at least a couple of cases of bottled water to take to Haven of Rest. When the homeless are left to wander in the broiling heat of summer all day, the Haven of Rest gives each of them two bottles of water when they leave the shelter in the morning. What the heck. I drink bottled water so I am buying a couple cases anyway so why not a couple of extra cases. It only costs $2.99 a case. Homeless people here suffer in the heat of summer like those homeless around CNY suffer without proper shelter from the weather in winter.

MHA usually has a thanksgiving dinner for everyone. It is held at Chancellor Apartments since their community room is huge. I have never been to it. They also do the same for christmas and I have never attended that either. I am not fond of many of the food choices. I heard the people who put the dinners on will be bringing prepared food in a styoform container for those who wish one. I think the food pantry or rescue mission donates the uncooked food. Somebody must I would think. MHA certainly has been busy giving out food boxes stuffed with all types of items from eggs to meat to milk to coffee. At least once per month. Meals on wheels even donated meals during the high point of the pandemic when many were afraid to go out. The only one I liked was the Chicken Marsala. I heard that many in the building did not like the food choice so just disposed of them down the garbage shoot! We even got one huge box along with a letter from President Trump even signed by him.
