Yep. It's getting old. If I don't stay on top of keeping the leaves cleaned up as they fall, they end up 6 inches deep and hard to mulch and collect with the tractor. Thankfully the walnut tree is almost bare of leaves AND walnuts.
The two huge maples, the oak, a huge ash, and several dogwoods are still dropping leaves. I am going to do the routine again today and will probably mulch up the maple leaves along my next door neighbor's driveway. He has 6 medium sized maples along his driveway and a substantial amount of the leaves from one of my maples and an oak drop on his side along the driveway.
Beautiful day today. 3 and sunny.

It's 47 up here & raining lightly right now. I haven't even winterized my mower etc. yet but Wednesday is looking decent with temps in the 50's so I'll be doing that. Thursday night & Friday they're talking about a rain/snow mix. Yuck!

Well I got started cleaning up leaves and with about 2/3 of the yard covered I was coming back from across the road where I dump the mulch and my poor old 18 yr old tractor that I have nursed along and babied finally gave up the ghost and either threw a rod or dropped a valve and put a hole in the piston. I made a horrible noise and stopped dead. When I tried to restart it it just clattered and backfired. I has been losing compression and using a little oil this year and I knew it would be the last year for it, but I was hoping it would get me through the leaf cleanup and let me pull my garden cart around to clean up the garden and do away with the waste.
I went shopping. I found that most places have sold out the major portion of their riding mowers and tractors. Home Depot had ONE and that one was a reconditioned mower that they had taken 200 bucks off the price. I asked about the warranty and they said that the factory warranty would not even be in effect for a second owner. Off to Lowes I go. They had two mowers left. Both were Cub Cadets with 48 inch decks and both were priced in the $2400 range. Rural King had one little rear engine Snapper left with a 36 or 38 inch deck and only 10 horse power. I finally found a Troy Built 547cc 42 inch deck that was the last one they had and I talked them down from $1349 to$1100 plus tax because it had sat on the line outside for a while. After taxes it was close to $1300 anyway. That was $1300 bucks I didn't have any intention of spending but I can't complain when the little $950 dollar Craftsman gave me 18 years of faithful service.

Damn things are almost the cost of a used car! lol! I'm beginning to wish I had one here. Though the yard is small, I take care of the neighbors front yard as well and it would sure make the chore easier. I've been wanting to get out there and mow once more before winter, but it either is, has, or is in the process of raining every time I have a day off. Or I have a random Dr. appointment in the middle of the day and not enough time left before dark to get it done. GRRRRRR!!!!
