I had to break out a warm jacket this morning. It was in the low 80's here yesterday, was still at 70 at midnight when I went to bed. I woke up to the low fifties this morning with the high today not expected to reach 60.
By the end of the week I will have to put sheets over the pepper plants at night with the possibility of a frost in the forecast for some places. I guess fall weather roller coaster is here. I have a ton of peppers still coming on the plants. I hate to give up on them quite yet. If I can hold off on pulling the plants up for another couple of weeks the small peppers that are on the plants now will be mature and ready to pick. I was in the garden yesterday to harvest some chilis and I noticed that one of the bell pepper plants has 12 peppers on the one plant. I am puzzled as to why the peppers are so abundant this season. I am doing nothing different than I have done in past years and the pepper plants are so heavy with fruit that they are tipping over the cages that are securely tied to stakes driven in the ground. The number of peppers on some of the plants is actually causing the plant's branches to droop and break under the weight.
I have all the hot peppers that I will want for the winter. Kathy is pickling another batch of cherry peppers today and I am going to freeze a few more Anaheim chilis. The remaining I am going to give to my neighbor. We have all the sweet and hot peppers that we need or have room for in the freezer and pantry.
BHU, how did your garden fare this season? I didn't have any success in growing our tomatoes or cukes this year. The tomatoes had a thick and tough skin due to the hot and dry summer even though I watered them often, early in the morning before the sun was high. Cucumbers didn't yield crap and the plants were dying from the sun and heat even with regular watering. the weather seemed to be quite beneficial to the weeds though. I don't remember when I have had to cultivate as often as I did this year. I am sorry that I didn't manage to till up a larger plot. I usually plant butternut squash and have a wheelbarrow or two of squash for Kathy to cut up for the freezer. I am going to buy a bushel from the produce market so that we will have some for the holidays and to carry us through the winter.
Now comes the usual period of indecision as I debate whether to plant a garden next year and if so, how big I should make it. I love the garden but I am also getting a bit old to spend the necessary time caring for it in the 90 degree heat. This year I got the garden in late and actually had a hard time keeping up with it at times with the extreme heat we had this summer.
