Mass shootings at parties, churches, shopping centers, and random shootings on the streets are not uncommon any more. The country is in an unstable and scary state, and violence is rampant all around us. One person with a legally permitted handgun could put a stop to a mass shooting, save lives, and reduce the number of victims. I never thought I would see the day that I would feel an urgent need to be able to protect myself, Kathy, and our property from violence and harm. Sadly that time has arrived. I shopped a couple of gun stores yesterday and intend to check a couple of more pawn shops and gun dealers today.
There seems to be a run on handguns recently. I am in the market for a short barrel 9 mm concealed carry weapon, preferably for under $350. I saw plenty of them yesterday but all priced between 4 to 6 hundred bucks. Ideally I would like a Taurus model G2. It is a dependable and no frills 9 mm weapon with a 3 1/2 inch barrel and a12 round magazine capacity. I found them at Rural King in Bristol Va but they are not allowed to sell to Tennessee residents. If I don't find one today I will probably drive the 60 miles to Morristown Tn to a Rural King that is in Tennessee where I can purchase that same gun for $219 on sale.
NOBODY is going to drag me from my truck and beat my ass if I can possible prevent it, and looking down the barrel of a large caliber pistol tends to discourage such an act. I am a firm believer in the saying it is better to have a gun and never need it than to need a gun and not have one. Many years ago I had a NY pistol permit so that I could hunt deer with a long barreled 357 magnum with a scope. It stayed in a gun cabinet drawer except during deer season, when I carried it open carry and only strapped it on when at the range or when entering the woods to hunt. Now I have many friends who carry a small self defense weapon concealed. I was surprised to see how many of the people I socialize with actually are armed and most people never know it. Not long ago we were discussing the number of people that are carrying guns for self protection. One of the ladies that we bowl with opened her purse and revealed a purple snub nose revolver in a compartment made into her purse for quick access. She owns a business and sometimes makes night deposits at the bank. Another friend that is a farmer is never without his small .32 auto tucked in a belt clip holster and covered with his untucked shirt. A truck driver I know that travels the Southeast in states that have reciprocal agreements with Tennessee. He carries a 9mm Sig Sauer in his truck in a magnetic holder that adheres to the steering column of the truck.
I used to take pride in a sizeable collection of hunting rifles, and enjoyed recreational shooting. I sold many of those guns when we left NY and only have 3 or 4 long guns left. When I become a pistol owner for home and self defense I will probably sell all but a 22 rifle for varmints, and a 900xl Ithaca Deerslayer 12gage shotgun that belonged to my best friend that died in the late 70's. I am not sure that my surgically repaired shoulder could ever endure shooting a shotgun again, haha, but I will always keep it because his widow gave it to me after he died.
Guns are an investment that seem to hold their value and even increase in value with time. A year or so ago I sold a 270 Weatherby rifle with a Leupold scope that I used for woodchuck hunting. It was great, flat shooting, long range gun for medium sized game. I paid $700 bucks for it new and sold it for $1100. I sold a Winchester Model 94 lever action carbine that I paid $150 for used at a gun store that used to be on Oriskany Blvd by the Patio Drive-in for the $150 I paid for it and I had hunted with it for 15 yrs or more. Quality firearms are like money in the bank.
Just curious. How many of us have a pistol permit and carry a weapon for self or home defense? What do you carry? How much does a permit cost where you live. As a veteran I can get an advanced concealed carry permit that is good in 30 states for $68.
