Good morning and happy Labor Day. Celebrations for a large part are much different than in past years. We will have a small cookout today for just the four of us. Steaks on the grill, salads, home made baked beans, and later, a home made apple pie with vanilla ice cream.
We will be bringing a bit more labor to this labor day as Kathy's nephew and I install new guttering on our garage. Jim and Deb go from dawn to dusk. They tire me out just watching them and providing moral support while they work. In two days they have completed several projects with more on the agenda for today. They are truly a blessing to Kathy and I. So far Jim has raked off, seeded, and laid straw on all the sewer project area as well as the two large areas where I ground out the stumps and roots. Deb cleaned out around all the flower beds and under the rose bushes, grabbed the string trimmer and knocked out the weed whacking around the entire property. Yesterday Jim applied the silver roof seal to the entire garage roof, about 800 square feet, and he and I installed the new facia board on the garage. Today we are going to install the new guttering on the garage, and if there is time, Jim is going to seal the roof on the carport. Deb is brush painting the ornamental wrought iron work on the front porch with a 1 1/2 inch brush, a tedious and time consuming task that I have been putting off for a couple of years. That will leave only two major tasks that were on the list of projects that he always have us prepare before he visits. He still has to clean and reseal the rubber roof on the trailer, and to lay new tile in our bathroom. Kathy has been kept busy cooking and baking.
Our days have been full, and we have ended each day relaxing and chatting in the carport with whatever dessert Kathy has prepared. They are here until next Sunday, so we are planning to have about 4 days to relax, unwind, and travel around the area a bit, perhaps another cookout, and definitely a couple of dinners out, and lots of just enjoying each other's company.
I hope everyone else is filling their holiday weekend with plenty of pleasure and relaxation. The pandemic has certainly changed the way we celebrate holidays this year, but other than confining the number of people we are in direct contact with, while socializing, most people I know have still been able to go to the lake and/or have cookouts. Yesterday I drove by a house on the way to Lowes where there was about a dozen people gathered in their side yard, with smoke rising from their smoker or grill. They were all in their folding lawn chairs, properly distanced in a circle, with their plates in their laps, eating and enjoying each other's company.
Enjoy your day and stay safe.
