I planned to do some cleanup in the portion of the little glade across the road today. I hooked up the garden cart to the tractor, loaded my cordless hedge trimmer, my string trimmer, my chain saw, and lopping shears and headed out, hoping to get a lot done before the rains came. It is such a pretty spot, shaded by cedar trees, with the little brook babbling through it. We reclaimed it from cow pasture several years ago when the environmental folks told the farmer that he had to fence off the pasture on the far side of the creek to keep the cows out of it. He told my neighbor and I that we could mow it and keep it cleaned up so the weeds would not block the visibility when pulling out of a little side road adjacent to it. I asked him a few years ago if he would care if I dumped my mulched leaves over there in the fall and he said I could, so I have a large pile of composting leaf matter over there to till into my garden this fall. For probably the past 10 or 12 years my neighbor and I have kept it mowed and cleaned up. Tall weeds and wild berry bushes are constantly attempting to encroach on the groomed portion of it. It is directly across from our house so I keep the overhanging branches trimmed 8 foot or so above the ground. It is cool and shady along the creek. I put a small wooden bench over there a few years ago. Sometimes when I am mowing or working outside on a hot day I will take a cold bottle of iced tea and sit over there in the shade while I rest. Very peaceful with that little brook babbling along , interrupted only by traffic passing by on the road.
I got all the weeds cut back and cleaned up, and mowed the area, but when I shut the tractor off I could hear thunder in the distance. By the time I picked up all my tools and hooked the wagon back up to the tractor it started to rain. By the time I drove across the road and put the tractor in the garage it rained so hard that I ended up hiding in my shop for about a half an hour before it slowed down enough to make a dash for the house. Spent that time hand sharpening a couple of chisels on a whet stone, put a coat of paste wax on my table saw table so wood will slide easily, and wiped down some hand tools that I had used and left laying about with an oily rag and put them back where they belong. I hate not having anything to do. I hate it when I can't be outside doing something. I only got about two hours of decent weather to work in and was rained out by noon. It rained and drizzled all the rest of the day.
Kathy and I spent the rest of the day lazily watching HGTV and napping on and off, so now it is after 11pm and I am not the least bit sleepy.
