I got up at 7:30 this morning and the social media and local news is blowing up with news of a 5.1 earthquake centered about 80 miles east of us in North Carolina at about 8 am. Some people in the area, especially up on the Virginia side of town, felt the rumbles and said that their houses shook. I didn't feel anything here.
It was severe enough to damage streets and water mains in Sparta NC. I saw photos of a Food Lion supermarket with merchandise scattered all over the floors where it was shaken off the shelves. Had to be a bit alarming to be at the center of it.
Never a dull moment. I remember going through several tremors when I was stationed in Long Beach California in the 60's. A couple of them were severe enough to shake things off of a table and send us scurrying to get under a door casing and grabbing something to steady ourselves. I remember seeing a map at the time that showed a fault line that came down our street and out into the ocean. Thank goodness the quakes were never centered close by.
