I can't imagine a bourbon flavored or fireball whiskey infused ice cream. I guess I may have biased opinion when it comes to alcohol consumption having had my own personal battles with it in my younger days, but the number of businesses that are bringing new products and sources for alcohol consumption to the market place seem to be proliferating at a noticeable rate.
I have no problem with the number of craft breweries that are popping up all over our local area, and probably upstate NY as well. We also have seen a couple of craft distilleries pop up in our area, but ice cream stands selling ice cream that contains alcohol? The article states that the ice cream will be allowed to contain 5% alcohol by volume. Beer contains approximately 5% ABV. People can get falling down drunk on beer. Gilligans is an ice cream stand in Sherburne that has been there for as long as I can remember and has always been much like a Dairy Queen or similar to Bonomo's in Kirkland. Will they gain a noticeable number of customers with alcoholic ice cream on the menu?
It is doubtful that anyone will be able to get dangerously drunk on the ice cream. I think that the average person would probably puke before they consumed enough sweet and heavy ice cream to reach a state of inebriation. I wonder if a person could consume enough ice cream to register over the limit on a breathalyzer or to be noticeable on a person's breath if they get stopped in a traffic stop though. I guess there must be a market for it or it would not have made it to Albany for approval. Another question would be whether the ice cream vendor will have to be licensed by NY state ABC in order to dispense the swirly cocktail on a cone. Will a person have to be 21 and show proof of age in order to buy the stuff?
I guess in reading the article I was just left wondering why. Why would anyone want an alcoholic ice cream cone?
