Damn. I just can't seem to catch a break. There is a restaurant supply here that advertised free scrap wood from packing crates and pallets. They had a huge pile of clean looking pallets so I took the tonneau cover off my truck and put it in the garage so I could pile them fairly high and strap them down.
Just my luck. I wasn't there 2 minutes before I got stung by a wasp. I looked around and there were a crap load of them buzzing all around me and they were really pissed off because I threw the pallet with their nest in it on the ground as I was intending to sort some of the cleaner ones to use for craft wood in my shop and the others that were not as serviceable in a pile that I intended to cut up with my circular saw for my sister and brother in-law to burn in their firepit. The nest was huge. They had been building it for a while. I closed the tailgate on the truck, jumped in it and got the hell away from there. I had left the driver's side window down so I had no more than pulled out of the place and I noticed a wasp crawling on the dash. Pretty soon he was flying around me. I rolled the window down and shooed that one out. I looked back up and there was another one crawling on the sun visor. I pulled in a Food City parking lot and shooed that one out the door. There were a couple more crawling on the back window. I had parked with the driver's door almost even with where I stirred up the nest. I drove the rest of the way home with all four windows down, haha.
Sorry sis, no firewood for you today. I am not afraid of wasps, but I am really surprised that they only got me once and that was on my wrist. The damned things were flying all around me. I am surprised that one or more of them didn't notice that shiny landing strip on the back of my head when I started swatting at them with my cap, LOL.

Is there an over abundance of wasps in CNY this summer. For some reason there seems to be many many more than normal here. We have red wasps, blue wasps, and black wasps with yellow stripes. Thank goodness they don't bother anyone unless disturbed.

In years past I'd get a lot of honey bees & wasps that would feed off the apples & pears which would fall to the ground mid fall. This year there isn't one apple on our tree & only a dozen or so pears. I don't care about the apples because they have worms in them but the pear tree would produce enough to feed an army. I'd give them away. I don't know anyone that I hate enough who I could unload all those apples on so I would let the city take them for green waste pickup. Oh wait, I'm not a big fan of Palmieri, maybe next year.

My mom and dad had a pear tree in their back yard. When there was windfalls that layed on the ground long enough to start to rot, yellow jackets and wasps would be all over them. the pears were delicious but picking up the windfalls was a tedious task when I went up there to mow.

The crab apple trees in Chancellor Park must have then again this year but not for long cause every Muslim kid some with parents and many Oriental kids and parents just about tear down the trees to pick the apples each year. They have already destroyed 5 trees which had to be finally removed. They grab the branches and pull and pull until they break then strip all the apples and run. Probably strip cars the same way.

When I was in the Monastery in Southern Missouri our Novitiate property had 6 apple and 6 pear trees as well as 6 plum trees. We also had many blueberry shrubs and raspberry shrubs. On the sides of the entrance gate were two beautiful dogwood trees. Would always be a great source of meditation for us Franciscan Monks in formation. Not may aware of this about the Dogwood.

We have a plum tree in our yard that I planted about 8 years ago. It's a Shiro, a Japanese variety. The fruit is delicious but this year it produced 3 plums that's it. The tree has black knot a fungul disease & the only way I can save the tree is to prune it down to nothing & hope it recovers. i may do it this fall when it goes dormant. There's nothing like fruit picked fresh off a tree. I bought a bag of plums from Hanafords a couple weeks ago & they were tasteless. They're doing to fruit what they do to tomatoes. GMO the crap out of them so they don't spoil but ruin the flavor.

We also had a bad experience with plums a few weeks ago. My favorite produce stand had beautiful looking dark purple plums packaged in 2 1/2 lb bags for $4.49. We were very disappointed. They looked delicious but had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. You and I agree on the tomatoes also. One of the reasons I purchase most of our produce at that particular place is that it is always fresh and most of it is either certified organic or at least GMO free. No pink, pulpy, and flavorless tomatoes like you buy at a super market. I eat a lot of vegetables since I switched to a healthier diet. I eat salad at least once a day and often have both a salad as well as a large helping of vegetables with dinner and his produce is normally fresh and delectable.

There's a produce stand not far from here that advertises "home grown tomatoes". To me home grown means out of the garden. Those are not, they're grown in a greenhouse. I can tell the diference & they're not the same. I picked my first Jet Star the other day & I've been picking grape tomatoes for a week. Zucchini is done for & tomorrow I'll be picking swiss chard & freezing it. I also have quite a few long hots but I'll wait till they turn red then freeze those for this winter.

I didn't plant any slicing tomatoes this year. I planted Roma's and they are so plentiful on the plants that they are growing in clumps like grapes and look great. I planted late so they won't be ready for a while yet but the yield is going to be awesome. I planted all three colors of bell peppers when I was finally able to find the plants. They are also heavy with fruit. 4 and 5 large peppers on every plant. My cherry peppers are just now getting peppers on them and the Anaheim peppers are just blooming and haven't set fruit yet. I planted late so I don't expect miracles this year but I am happy with what IS producing.
