I was in that area a few days ago to go to Guiseppe's bakery on Mohawk. Between the roads being practically undriveable & the street thugs lurking about, the area is a nightmare. From now on I'll go to Chanatry's for G's bread. It's a damn shame what has become of East Utica.

The last time we were home for a visit I took Kathy over onto the far eastern part of Lansing and Blandina streets to show her the two houses where my dad was brought up and then went to O'scugnizzo's for a pizza. The people walking in the streets and those hanging on the corners prompted us to lock the doors and after seeing the houses way out east end, we dropped down to Broad St and took Broad St back downtown, to John St and then back over Bleecker to the pizza joint. NEVER again will we visit that part of town. We will settle for pizza from Joe's in Whitesboro.
The west end isn't much better. When we went to Pulaski Meat Market on Lenox Ave we found ourselves in the middle of a ghetto also.

Yes it is a shame the area is very dangerous. I carry a knife and pepper spray with me at all times when I am walking. I have seen some people shooting drugs( I just walk by fast) I have also seen drug sales going down in broad daylight on Bleecker St and in the Park.
I think only some distant areas in East Utica are still safe Albany Hill, area around MVCC. Once you hit Mohawk Street and James Street is become increasingly bad and dangerous. West Utica just as bad and maybe worse.
I guess South Utica area is OK and parts of North Utica.
One thing for sure shooting are happening during the daylight hours now. I guess the gangsters want to watch movies at night

Tony Sparagna's now closed had some of the best Italian food in the city. We bought a couple tables from Joe Tahan's furniture 4-5 years ago. Rather then pay delivery charges I opted to pick them up myself from their warehouse which is on the upper end of Lenox Ave right off the arterial. I swore on the way back down Lenox I was going to get hijacked in broad daylight. Well, I made it & haven't been back over there since.

We loved Tony Sparagna's. We used to go there for dinner with my middle son and his wife when we came home. After he closed we started enjoying a large pizza and 50 wings at O'scugnizzo's instead. We also used to try and hit the Spaghetti Factory in the beach for dinner with Kathy's nephew and his girlfriend while home but they recently noted that the service sucked and the food was not as good the last time they went there. We still try to hit the Pulaski Meat Market for kielbasa. If we don't get it there we go to Meelan's in Clark Mills. They also have excellent store made kielbasa. We also ALWAYS hit Chanatry's for Italian sausage. 10 or 15 lbs of both kielbasa and Italian sausage and sometimes 10 lbs of Hoffman's hot dogs with the natural casing. That fills the cooler but leaves enough room for the dry ice. The last stop the morning we are hitting the road for home is Holland Farms for jelly buns and cinnamon donuts.
It is sad to watch the city going to hell as badly as it is. I seldom go into the inner city anymore, and after my last ride through East Utica I will go into the city even less. PB and Ralph have my sympathy having to live where they do. Where Ralph lives used to be a very nice neighborhood. Now you have to have a concealed carry permit and a pistol to take the garbage to the curb.

Years ago the traffic on Bleeker St. on a weekend night would be practically bumper to bumper. Now you can throw a stone from one end to the other & not hit anyone. East Utica nowadays below Rutger St. is 75% run down. This is what happens when job oppurtunities vanish & the drug trade takes over.

. Now you have to have a concealed carry permit and a pistol to take the garbage to the curb. And that is exactly how I put my garbage out when I get home from work. Armed to the teeth.

We usually stop at the Florentine Bakery for cannolli and espresso, when we visit family. How is that area now?

We stopped there for cannoli's when we were home but we stopped in mid afternoon when the street was fairly busy with people going in an out of the bakery. I don't know about the rest of Bleecker St. I know that when you go south on Mohawk St from Bleecker, things get real sketchy in a hurry. I don't think I would go to Giuseppe's either.
I never thought I would see the day when I felt unsafe anywhere in Utica. Back in the early 70's before I quit drinking I frequented just about every bar in every section of the city at one time or another and never felt threatened. Now it is not safe to even wander off of Genesee Street or the arterial.
