Kathy was just starting supper and I was putting the tractor, the lawn mower and garden tools away outside when it started to sprinkle. Within just few minutes the storm blew in and the wind started blowing hard. It was not long before the power went out. I had a choice of raw porkchops, raw fresh green beans, and raw potatoes. Everything was on the stove and just beginning to cook. I opted for a salad and a ham sandwich by candle light. It was storming to badly to get out the grill or camp stove, and the trailer is parked down the road at a neighbor's house until I finish the concrete work on the driveway and then have it sealed. I guess maybe I need to purchase a generator that produces 4000kw or more and have an electrician install a plug where I can plug it into the house and run the refrigerator, the kitchen tv, and a couple of lights.
We had some rather scary thunderstorms roll through last night. Our neighbor kitty corner and across the road had a 60 or 70 foot tall Georgia pine come down on their shed and an apple tree toppled in their back yard. That big pine with a trunk that is more than 3 feet across split and broke off about 12 or 15 feet above the ground. My next door neighbor had a 25 or 30 foot tree break off about 10 feet above the ground an blow over on his fence. Our power was out for about 3 hours. The storm had toppled a large tree and the tree broke off a utility pole that is located about 50 yards from the road, inaccessible by a bucket truck until the ground dries out, where the line goes through some woods in the pasture across the road.
I went out and surveyed OUR yard this morning in the daylight and we were spared any damage at all thank goodness. Gusts of over 60 mph were recorded and with all the mature trees that we have we were very fortunate to have been spared even the smallest of limbs down.
The tv news reported that we had 2.5 inches of rain fall in about 20 minutes in some places. Creeks rose rapidly and flash floods and small stream flooding all happened in a matter of a few minutes. It was the scariest thunder storm by far that we have witnessed since moving here. The wind howled so loud that we were afraid it was a tornado. It raised all that hell all around us in a matter of minutes and then was gone as quickly as it came.
It looks like it is going to be a beautiful day in Utica today. Enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. It is another day for missing the Adirondacks. I would love to sitting by our trailer with a hot cup of coffee, looking out over an Adirondack lake or the West Canada.
