When I see a child fishing I see a child that is not on a street corner hanging out with a wrong crowd or getting into trouble. Teaching a kid to appreciate and love the outdoors through camping, fishing or hunting gives them a foundation and nurtures a love for nature that lasts a lifetime.
I bet that the boy you gave that tackle box to treasured it and spent many hours along side a stream or lake. My boys fished from the time they were able to hold a pole and grew to love it as much as I do. My oldest son has taken the time out of his busy life with a job that requires long hours and a lot of travel, to teach my great grandsons how to fish and he and my grandson take them fishing often.
Many of my favorite memories are of spending time with my dad and his father fishing and hunting. I was ecstatic one Christmas morning when I opened gifts and found that I was given a boy scout back pack, a mess kit, and a canteen. I saved up enough to buy a surplus pup tent from an army surplus place that used to be on Bleecker St. I already had a sleeping bag. From that day on whenever I could I tied the sleeping bag and tent to my backpack, made a bag of sandwiches and me and friends went somewhere where to pitch a tent, have a campfire and sleep out. Boy Scout campouts at Camp Ballou in Frankfort Center or Camp Russell on White Lake are among some of those memories. We even camped one weekend in winter at Camp Russell when I belonged to Troop 16 at Seymour School.
My first wife and I used to get a fresh air kid from NYC every year. We had a lad named Danny from Brooklyn for two or three years running. We took him camping the first year he was with us. He was about 8 or so. He was afraid because he had never slept anywhere completely dark and dead quiet. The following year when we picked him up at Union Station the first thing he asked was whether we could go camping and fishing.
I hope I am able to play a part in introducing kids to nature, fishing, and the outdoors for as long as I am able to navigate the outdoors myself and I hope that giving that young lad your tackle box is a memory that he will cherish for a lifetime.

Wow! another hot one here today. It was over 80 by 8:30 this morning. I am getting absolutely nothing done around here lately. I DO have to get out and mow after I come back from cardiac rehab this afternoon.
Stay cool and stay hydrated.

Not quite as hot today, 84 right now. For me that is still too hot to do our walk around the neighborhood. I suggested to Barb that we could go to Sangertown and do the mall walk thing.

Yesterday was wicked hot. I got bored later in the day after dinner which was homemade spaghetti & meatballs so I drove the riding mower under the shade of the old apple tree out back & washed it. That was it. Then I watched the Trump interview with Chris Wallace from 7-8. Amazing.

Hopefully they put some benches down in order to sit. When I was there no bench to be found including the food court. Enjoy the walk. A walk up Bleecker St to the Police Station around the block then back to downtown up Genny then over Elizabeth to the Fire Station then down Bleecker to Chancellor and sit and rest. Eventually I add to this I like to continue on the St Josephs, St Patrick's Church. I really want to get back to my daily walk from a few years ago. That was all the way down Rutger St to Proctor Park then around the Park and back up Rutger St again. I was able to do it in about 1 hour and 1/2. A walk from Sangertown to Rutger St is fun then Bus ride home.

Well, I finally stopped after rehab and got my fishing license. the same price as NY for a senior or disabled veteran, 5 bucks. I ended up at BassPro. I stopped first at Dick's Sporting Goods. This is the third time I have gone there and the third time I have been told that they no longer sell what I am wanting to buy. I went there for new bowling shoes a year or so ago. "Sorry sir, we don't sell bowling equipment any more" The last time I was there it was for 22 cartridges. I had often bought ammo there. "Sorry sir, we no longer sell guns or ammunition." Today I was told "sorry sir, we no longer sell fishing licenses." I told the guy that I probably will just stop coming in because by the next time I come they won't be selling anything but running shoes, sports bras and jock straps. He chuckled and recommended Bass Pro/Cabela's which are now combined in a huge store at the new Pinnacle shopping area.
Now all we need is a spell when it is cool enough to go fishing. It was 96 degrees when I came out of rehab.

I was going out to mow after supper but it is still 88 degrees out there and there is a powerful thunder storm headed toward us that could spawn a downburst. Maybe I should consider buying a few goats.
I have the battery operated lights out and the Ipad charged so we can watch Netflix if the power goes off.

It got pretty gnarly to our Northwest in Eastern Kentucky and SW Virginia. We didn't even get any rain. Now there is another wild storm system moving NE from the Knoxville area. That one is going to miss us to the SE. I guess I better get up early and water the garden.
Both systems had winds in excess of 50mph that did plenty of damage to roofs and trees.

Another hot one. 96 when I came out of rehab. The six o'clock news said the heat index was 104 in Kingsport this afternoon.
We are finally getting some rain. Heavy rain and thunderstorms have gone all around us for the last three nights and we didn't get a drop. The garden is finally getting a nice long and gentle watering. Now it needs to dry out so I can mow. It has just been too damned hot to sit on the tractor for an hour and a half to get the grass mowed and the week whacking done.
Tomorrow is my last day of cardiac rehab for awhile. They are shutting it down because of the virus and I will have to wait until they call and open again before I can complete the last 21 sessions and graduate. I really want to graduate from the program and move to phase III so I can use the exercise equipment for $3 a day. They have all the latest equipment and a universal gym machine for weight work once a person graduates from the first two phases.
I am going to try and find an exercise machine of one type or another on the marketplace websites so that I can keep up the daily routine until they re-open.
