I having been doing this for a couple of years. Really interesting. I am adopted and I have been able to find all but one of my brothers. It is so cool to be able to have my big family back. I was never told I have 3 older brothers and a sister that passed. So now I'm trying to track my birth fathers family. My birth mothers family has been easier to track, they all stayed in the same area, and there still are family members around. We just can't get past our grandmother since she was in foster care at the age of 8. So don't know who her birth parents were. We are thinking her mother died giving birth.

Keep us posted as to your progress bblvr. We were thrilled when pasafino was able to use the forum to locate one of his birth parents. It is a great feeling of satisfaction to know that in adulthood, the mysteries of who he/she is and where he/she comes from. In the case of Pasofino, a name was put out there, someone recognized the name and the search was on. It was a great day on the forum when Pasofino had contacted relatives and was on the path to discovering a whole lost family.
Whether you use the forum in your search or not, the actual story is of interest to us all. It is heart warming to know that someone has made contact and discovered a family history that had been lost or hidden for all of their lives. It brings happiness to a person simply reading about such success in a search for one's mother and father.

Pasofino's family was from the Utica area. Kansas and Alabama make for a harder nut to crack, but stranger things have happened. I wish you and your birth family luck in your quest to locate your brother. Maybe someone here might know of a source of info, or a resource that you have not yet found or utilized. One might possibly place a classified ad in a paper in the area that you last know he lived in. If someone knows him, they might read it and alert him that his family is trying to locate him. Hell, try and contact that TV guy "The Locator". It is amazing some of the cases that he is able to resolve. Check it out at www.wetv.com/thelocator When you get to the page, click on "casting" in the menu and it will show you a "request form" link that will allow you to apply to have your case investigated by Troy Dunn. Good luck my friend, and God bless.

Has anyone utilized the Utica Public Library's genealogy department? I'm looking for reviews before I make a trip in.

Denise, there is a man who works in that department who will help you out. Can't remember his name at the moment but he will be there for sure. He has helped many people find their family history, even their family members and even some who were adopted. Don't feel you will regret making the trip in.

Denise, have you scanned fultonhistory.com for newspapers that might help your search? Through use of that site, I was able to place a number of aunts and uncles and understand my great grandfather in the context of his times when I did the Great Uncle Mike thread. Tedious, but rewarding. Certainly not like cemetery records, but useful all the same. In the case of my grandfather on my mother's side, I discovered who all these old folks were I knew as a small child. I thought they were friends, I guess. Turns out they were his siblings.

I have gotten everything out of Fultonhistory.com that I can possibly get. What a fabulous resource! Some of the newspaper articles are unclear and some articles that should fall into fultonhistory's time frame aren't available.
I'm interested in finding the articles I'm missing along with seeing if I can get clearer copies of the fuzzy ones. I'm also interested in naturalization records.

Yup, can't help you regarding genealogy resources. I'm more interested in history in general. If I see something that may be helpful, I'll post it. To be complete, although I'm sure you've seen it, for those interested here's a list of archived newspapers on the Internet, worldwide. Just the U.S. list contains about 1,300 newspapers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_online_newspaper_archives

I've had such a great experience using Ancestry.com! I've found interesting information, scandalous information and a family mystery. I've also made contact with some long-lost family.

Denise, I'm glad to hear that. How much does it cost? I've hesitated because I hate to pay for stuff.

If you do a year membership it isn't bad. I have U.S. membership, $199. I tried a monthly World membership but thought it was pricey for what I actually found. Ancestry usually offers a trial 14 day membership.

Denise... to find out about what the Utica Public Library has available, call them at 315-735-2279 and ask for Carl Antonucci or email him at cantonucci@mail.midyork.org/ He can refer you to the proper person and their availability at the library.
My ancestors and offspring settled in Utica and I did some research at the public library there. They have copies of the Utica City Directory that date back to 1854 (as far back as I needed to go) as well as census records and copies of local newspaper on microfische.
