I am very surprised to see numbers of new cases remaining low in an 8 county region around us. Nashville, Knoxville, and the tourist areas of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are seeing a fairly large rise in cases. Our 8 county area for the last few days has only reported 8 or 9 new cases a day with each county reporting only one case with the exception of one county that had 2 cases a few days ago.
I am afraid that it is only a matter of time before we see a serious spike in new cases. On the Virginia side of town and in the state of Virginia masks are absolutely mandatory when entering any public business or building or in situations where the 6 foot distance can't be maintained.
In Tennessee masks are highly recommended but people have become quite cavalier about wearing them. They are acting like the pandemic is a thing of the past. I see groups closely huddled together, people blocking the aisles of grocery stores while they chit chat without masks, making it impossible to get past them. Sadly I see only a small percentage of people that are still wearing a mask.
I still carry my sanitizer in my pocket and use it liberally and often. I wear a mask whenever I am in the presence of others other than at cardiac rehab where they have space the machines at least 8 or ten feet apart and require a person to wipe down the machine with Clorox wipes when they are finished using the piece of equipment. The staff is all wearing masks at all times.
Like most everyone else, I long for the day when we can move about without that lingering fear of contracting the virus. A young kid in a convenience store the other day cockily asked a lady if she had noticed that she was the only one in the store wearing a mask. I almost laughed out loud when she turned and bluntly told him that she was obviously the only one that was not an inconsiderate and ignorant ass. I probably would not have used such tame language but the point was made. I was a ways away from the counter but I also was wearing my mask, as was the cashier.
I fear at some time in the near future we will once more be back to where we will have to fear leaving our homes even to shop.
How are the numbers running in the Utica/Rome area? I read them on the WKTV web page but I haven't tracked them over a period of days to see if they are trending upward or downward.
