When we arrived home a little while ago, there was a squirrel crawling up our driveway dragging it's hind quarters behind it. It had been hit by a car but not killed. I had to dispatch it with a shovel to the head to put it out of it's misery, much to the chagrin of Kathy who told me not to do it until she was in the house so she didn't have to see it. LOL.
I wanted to skin it, dress it, and cook it, but Kathy was not into that idea either. It was a big and plump one. Would have been good eating. She said that we are not desperate enough yet to resort to road-kill, hahaha.

That is funny. A few years ago this very nice elderly lady who has a corner apartment on the first floor at Chancellor Apts. told me one morning while we were waiting for the Bus that the squirrel that she always talks about apparently wanted some food immediately. The darn thing jumped on the window screen and started pulling trying to pull it down so it could get into her apartment through the open window. Aggressive little thing. Gee you could have had a nice dinner like Granny cooks up on Beverly Hillbillies.

hahaha! I actually love squirrel. I used to hunt squirrels when I lived up North. Granny Clampet used to cook up Possum. People here in the South actually do eat possum. I don't care to eat it, but if I get my weight down to where I can walk better I may once again hunt for squirrels. The license for fishing also covers small game hunting so I might as well get my ten or twelve bucks worth, haha. They have "fox squirrels" here. They are quite a bit larger than the average gray squirrel. Their body is often close to two foot long not counting the tail and they can weight upward of two pounds. My friend and neighbor Fred gave me a couple when we first moved here. They were quite tasty. I marinated it and put it on the grill. He was my supplier of venison and other wild critters but he died of cancer about 8 yrs ago. The only venison I have had since then was when I happened upon an older lady that had hit a nice plump doe one night as we were coming home from bowling, and didn't want the meat. the cop put a road kill tag on it and I thoroughly enjoyed about 20 or 25 pounds of venison without ever having climb a ridge or shoot a gun. (Kathy was not much happier with the deer episode than she was with the squirrel idea.) She had a fit when I hung it in the carport to butcher it, caught the blood on a cheap vinyl tarp, and put the guts and the tarp in the garbage can. She made me fill the can with Clorox water and let it soak overnight after the garbage man had emptied it.

I haven't had squirrel or rabbit in many years. As a kid wild game was a regular part of our diet.
