PROFESSOR: SUMMER MAY SLOW SPREAD OF VIRUS, BUT WON'T ELIMINATE IT
As summer approaches, Utica College biology professor, Dr. Larry Aaronson, says the warmer weather could have an impact on coronavirus – although it won’t eliminate it entirely.

UTICA, N.Y. – As summer approaches, Utica College biology professor, Dr. Larry Aaronson, says the warmer weather could have an impact on coronavirus – although it won’t eliminate it entirely.
“Sunlight, because of the ultraviolet radiation, can damage the virus and cause it to be unproductive in its replication,” said Aaronson.
He says there is also evidence that temperature and humidity can hinder how the virus spreads in the air, but adds that “by no case do any of the data support the idea that the virus just goes away in the summertime.”
Aaronson says he does not recommend people spend too much time in the sunlight in an effort to kill the virus.
“It is not advisable to go to a tanning bed or sit out in the sun until your lobster red to kill the virus. It is only on inanimate objects that the virus is most susceptible to the effects of radiation,” he said.
Aaronson adds that the best way to protect against the virus and stop the spread is by “wearing masks, washing your hands and keeping your distance.”
