Rochester will mail 5 masks to every household; Monroe County will distribute 1 million free masks

ROCHESTER -- The City of Rochester is mailing five free disposable masks to every household address as part of an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.
According to the newspaper, the masks are set to go out in the mail next week. The effort will cost nearly $170,000. The city calculates the total number of homes at nearly 96,000, meaning nearly 480,000 will be sent out to residents.
he city is opting to mail them directly to citizens to avoid the need for individuals to gather in groups and to protect vulnerable citizens. Rochester has the third-largest population in the state behind only New York City and Buffalo.
The masks were acquired by Monroe County with funds from the CARES Act, according to Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. The county will give away more than 1 million marks and is encouraging citizens to consider the equipment part of everyday life for the foreseeable future.
Individuals outside the Rochester who would like to pick up free masks can do so between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday (May 9) or Wednesday (May 13).
“Let’s start to make this a habit because we don’t know when this is going to end,” Dr. Michael Mendoza, Monroe County’s public health commissioner, told the Democrat & Chronicle.
