Ughh. I woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep. My mind started thinking of all the things I want to do today. The eager anticipation had me sitting reading the newspaper over coffee, looking forward to getting my day started.
That eager anticipation was short lived. It is now 7am and I am tired and going back to bed. Do you ever wake up with your mind whirling and find yourself unable to shut it down and doze back off? I wonder if it has to do with the fact that we are pretty much confined to home and limited in options when it comes to what we are able to do.
It is going to be another great and sunny day with temperatures in the mid seventies and sunshine, and I am sure that I would be able to keep busy with yard work of one sort or another, but as much as I love working outside, it is getting a bit boring and tedious. Kathy is not up yet. I will see if she wants to get out and go somewhere. Maybe take a couple of sandwiches, go sit by the lake and soak up some sunshine and fresh air. Kathy hasn't left the house since we took a ride up into the mountains a couple of weeks ago.
How is everyone else holding up with being confined and restricted in movement? We are not by any means deeply depressed or anything. Just bored to death and ready to get out and get away. We had planned on meeting with some friends at a local park for a picnic lunch and socializing from a distance, but it was revealed that the park has been crowded every day and it would probably be difficult to find any isolated area to gather safely so we scrapped that idea for now.

I got up about 6:30 this morning & had planned on doing some yard work. The tree service was here Saturday & ground the tree stump out front. I have to rake out some of the shavings, backfill the hole, level it out & reseed. I started yesterday but didn't finish because I had to mow for the first time this year. The plan was to finish up today but temps here are in the 40's with light rain. So much for that idea. Never seen a spring as cold & rainy as this year.

Be sure you rake out plenty of the shavings and backfill with good dirt. I made the mistake of not properly cleaning up the shavings from a stump we had done. Like a dumbass I only shoveled out a few inches, added 3 or 4 inches of topsoil and reseeded it. Over a period of a couple of years the shavings must have rotted because the ground sank about 4 or 5 inches and I had to put more dirt in and reseed it over again. When I have the two trees cut down and the stumps ground this time I will call a guy that advertises topsoil delivery with a small dump truck and have a ton or two delivered.
It is going to be a nice day again today, but rain coming for the next couple of days.

We found a way to enjoy the sunshine and get out of the house for the afternoon. We are going to take a ride the strawberry farm store. Berry season is here and they also have other produce for sale plus great home made ice cream. Sounds like a good day to buy 6 or 8 quarts of strawberries for the freezer and a double scoop salted caramel ice cream cone. It seems like a pretty safe place to go. It is a sunny day here and the store has overhead doors all the way across the front. Masks and hand sanitizer in the truck and ready to go. Just vacuumed the truck and washed the inside of the windows where the dog has put her nose prints on them. Never thought I would be so excited to just take a ride and buy a few quarts of berries.

Must be something about today. Barb woke up about that time, got up and started doing chores. I tried to go back to sleep but couldn't. Now she is napping and I am surfing, doing my best to avoid the load of towels I am supposed to fold.

We had a nice ride. We went 35 miles to the strawberry farm store and bought 8 quarts of strawberries. We were drooling of their home made ice cream but that was shut down because of the virus business. Had to pee, and they had their rest rooms blocked off to the public. Had to stop at a Dollar General to find a public bathroom that was open. Then we went another 32 miles to Kingsport to our favorite bakery for 1/2 dozen chocolate frosted custard filled donuts, and then 23 miles back home to Bristol. It was a beautiful sunny day and we leisurely cruised along for the entire 90 miles enjoying the fresh air and scenery.
We debated whether we should stop and eat somewhere but all of the popular restaurants had full parking lots even though they are only allowed to serve 50% capacity with tables spaced 6 or 8 feet apart. We just weren't comfortable with that idea. I think it will be a while before I will want to eat in a restaurant dining room. It is unbelievable the amount of traffic on the roads and the number of people out running around like there was never a problem. The percentage of those wearing masks was about 50/50.
Had a nice day but now I am glad to be home, away from people, and just waiting for some wonderful smelling, home made Spanish rice that Kathy is making for supper. Strawberry shortcake is on the agenda later this evening. So much for my low fat diet for today.

Finished up this afternoon after 4 hrs of backbreaking work. Too late now so we'll see what happens. LOL!

That's probably my favorite dessert with homemade biscuits, none of that cake stuff for me. I was thinking of that dessert this morning. Years ago I would order it at Howard Johnson's on north Genny & it was the best. Like homemade.

We had our shortcake on home made drop biscuits. Kathy makes simple baking mix biscuits with just a splash of vanilla extract and some sugar added. Neither of us is fond of sponge cake or the little dessert cups for strawberry shortcake. Topped with a dollop of whipped cream it is my favorite summer dessert. When they come in season we buy probably 20 or more quarts that Kathy prepares for the freezer so that we have them for shortcake, cheesecake, and ice cream topping for periodic treats all year around.

We wont have to think about any fresh berries around here for a while. This Saturday it's going to snow, & blustery. I have blossoms on my pear & plum trees. Not good. This morning it was 26* when I got up.

It is cold here today. Low fifties and there might be a frost tonight in some areas around here. I guess it is going to be rainy on and off and unseasonably cool for a few days. Today was weird. Gloomy one minute and sprinkling rain, and sunny and bright the next. Was like that all day.
