So very nice today. Sadly it is going to end and bring soaking rain and cold all day Sunday and Monday. Other days not so hot either. It is 61 and very sunny now at 4 PM.

I wish I could say the same. It was warm and cloudy, with rain on and off all day long. We may get some severe thunderstorms later. Had an 2 additional estimates on taking the two trees down, first bid for the one by the house was $1000. I thought I would get a couple more estimates. Both were for $1400. Guess who is going to get the job, haha. the other tree can wait a few weeks, but the one that is right outside our bedroom window, 70+ feet tall, and a brittle species of tree, can't come down soon enough to suit me. The thunder storm season is upon us and we get some pretty rowdy downslope winds off the mountains around us.

Could the tree just be trimmed drastically to eliminate as many branches that could cause damage or is the trunk to brittle to maintain the tree in heavy winds. It must be a majestic tree at 70 + feet tall. Maybe National Grid can come in and trim it for nothing they sure do chop up a tree. I saw one tree today they finished a few days ago. Looks like a cup now. Nothing in the center except for some outside branches that form a cup. I heard cutting down trees was expensive but I did not know $1000 expensive. Whew.

Our power company would take it down if it were interfering with the wires but our wires and meter are on the other side of the house. The tree is worrisome because it is only about 6 feet from the corner of the front porch and is at least 70 feet tall. If it came down on the house, our bedroom is in that front corner and we probably would be crushed in our bed. It is a sweet gum tree. A brittle soft wood noted breaking in a high wind. It has simply gotten so tall that when the wind blows hard and gusty the top of the tree sways back and forth several feet. I want it down before it leafs out, leaving the canopy more dense for the wind to grab.

I've got to call around this week to get an estimate on taking at least one tree down here. We have a big maple right by the corner of the house that is more than worrisome these days. Its canopy extends right over the back of the house where our bedroom is. We also have another that already shed a large branch a few years ago, resulting in the destruction of our grape arbor and a lot of the yard. I want to get at least the one by the house taken care of right quick. No sense even bothering to get an estimate on a new roof if I have a tree ready to take out the back of the house. They'll need a bucket truck to get at this sucker through the neighbors yard though. Should be interesting.

My neighbor from a couple houses down was here a couple years ago when I was at work asking the wife if it would be ok if a tree service put a crane in OUR back yard to remove a tree in theirs. She called me at work & I told her don't agree to anything. No way I'm allowing anyone to park a 20 ton crane in this yard. We never heard back from them & that tree is huge & should come down. It's all of 70 ft. & I'll bet that estimate was at least $2k. We paid $1000 bucks a few years ago for a cherry tree was at least 60 ft & it took a crew of 4 a good 6 hours to take it down. That sucker was huge.

Looks like a cup now. Nothing in the center except for some outside branches that form a cup. I heard cutting down trees was expensive but I did not know $1000 expensive. Whew. We had experience with National Grid when we lived on Herkimer Rd. We had three beautiful maples in the front yard that grew up into the wires. National Grid slashed a huge and ugly notch through the center of the trees, leaving a very ugly and unsightly remnant of what was formerly attractive and stately trees. In this area they don't tend to trim the trees around the wires. They send Asplundh Tree Service to "top" the offending tree. They leave the trunk and a few half bald lower branches to grow back. It takes years for any new top branches to form an acceptable looking canopy. It looks like they gave the tree a bad flat top hair cut. The guy that is going to take them down also gave us a price to top them but he doesn't recommend it. He is a licensed and certified arborist, and very few arborists approve of the practice.
