I always hated it when I had to be at that DD for something. I never worried about myself or my crew as I was always armed, but I felt like one of those moving ducks in a shooting gallery there, or a goldfish in a bowl. Just ripe to use for across the street target practice.

What a shame. Years ago, "the square" was a great area for dating. Take in a movie at the Oneida Theater, go across the street to Kewpees for burgers and frosted, chocolate malteds, then, down around the corner to Charlie's On the Square, for some live jazz. We will never see those times again. A shame.

Kewpees! I loved that place.
I avoid Oneida Square except to safely pass through while I am on a Bus and even then only in daylight.
There is this elderly guy ( my age , lol ) who lives up that way and once in a while I see him at McDonald's for coffee. Nice guy and the stories he tells about that area curls my hair. My hair is straight. There was a McDonalds up there that was closed I think because of the filth but also it because a place for drug interactions.

Back in the 70's when I was a student at Proctor we'd hop in the car & head there for lunch for a Whopper or whatever. You're right, we'll never see those days again when Utica was a saner & safer place. It is a shame.
