Our toilets have gurgled with the washing machine would empty for a few days but everything would go down and the toilets and sinks would drain okay. Well yesterday while I was gone to Johnson City Kathy decided to wash a load of bed sheets. The drain line to the tank had plugged and the water and sewage backed up into the house, leaving sewage water in the shower pan and the toilet had filled up and overflowed. It was a hell of a mess. We used about 8 heavy bath towels, my wet vac, and mop to clean up the water. It had even ran into the bathroom closets.
After we got the water mess cleaned up we disinfected with Clorox water, rinsed that, and the mopped with Lysol and water.
The septic service just left. He used a balloon device on the end of a hose to blow the clog loose in the drain line so the water drains freely to the tank for now, but the bad news is that at the earliest opportunity we need to have him replace the old orangeburg pipe all the way from the house to the septic tank. When we bought the house in 2002 it was 70 something years old. I imagine that the pipe is the original drain line.
As soon as the weather warms enough I will have him come back and replace the pipe. He quoted me $1200 to cut the driveway and replace the pipe, including installing a cleanout just across the driveway where I will be able to hook the sewer line from the travel trailer to drain it or to be able to use the toilet in the trailer when we have Kathy's nephew here every summer for a week or 10 days.
He told me that if it ever starts to back up like that again to step out the back door and remove the cleanout cap next to the porch and it would bubble out that cleanout instead of backing up in the house. Great. Instead of a mess in the house, I would have a stinky volcano erupting in the rose garden next to the back door, hahaha. Better than in the house for sure. Probably would make the roses grow good but I wonder if the blooms would smell different.
I now will load all those towels that I washed in a bucket outside yesterday into a plastic bag and go to the laundromat where I can put the whole load of towels into one of the heavy duty washers with Clorox to disinfect them, and dry them in the commercial dryer rather than for Kathy to have to do two loads of towels along with the normal laundry. When I get back from the laundromat, I will have to fill a bucket with Clorox water and suck it through the hose into my shop vac to disinfect the hose. Then I can wash the inside of the collection tub on the vac and rinse it good. I use the vac to hook up to my power saws for dust collection. If I don't clean the vac I will have some funky smelling air coming from the exhaust on the vac and some funky smelling sawdust. LOL
