Brook Apartments Fire The Utica Fire Department responded around 6 a.m. Wednesday to a fire on the first floor of Brook Apartments on Oneida Street, firefighters said. Firefighters initially responded to an automatic alarm at the apartments and smoke in the first-floor hallway, firefighters said. Upon arrival firefighters saw smoke coming from a vent and a doorway, and crews went floor to floor to check the smoke conditions and to ventilate, firefighters said. A fire department ambulance was called to the scene for evaluations, but no one was brought to the hospital, and no tenants were displaced firefighters said. National Grid and a contractor also responded to the scene. The cause of the fire and where the fire is confined to is still under investigation, firefighters said, and a fire marshal remained at the scene www.uticaod.com/news/20200212/crews-respond-to-utica-apartment-fireHope all is OK over there Kit. Were you affected by the fire Kit? Not a good day to be evacuated into the cold at 6 am while they investigated the incident.

Regarding the fire here at The Brook Apartments on Wedesday, no one was hurt in any way and damage was minimal. At about 6:00AM Wednesday morning someone who, against regulations, was smoking in their apartment and (probably) inadvertently disposed of a cigarette butt that was not completely extinguished down the garbage chute into the dumpster which is located on the 1st floor. The dumpster caught on fire. The main building alarm sounded immediately and the fire department came and extinguished it. There was a small amount of damage and the only repercussion to the tenants was having to listen to the awful sound of the building-wide alarm for over an hour with the elevators not working.
Yesterday there was an obligatory and mandatory meeting of all the tenants who smoke to remind them that this is a "No Smoking" building and now, because there was fire, the Fire Marshall is involved and they can have an offender arrested, fined, and/or imprisoned if they are convicted of a violation. It's the same in all HUD controlled buildings.
A minimal fire, but a severe warning to tenants.

Kit glad you are ok and no severe damage. Yes we have the same problem in my building. No Smoking Policy not being followed. I have a guy next to me that refuses to follow any rule. One of those neighbors from hell. I keep reporting him for his smoking and 5 AM this morning woke me up again with the smell of his stinky tobacco burning. Well have to call the office today. They send security. Security tells them the policy. Security leaves and he then lights another cigarette. How do you handle that.!!!!!!!

If he keeps breaking the rules then management needs to get tough and throw him out. Why should the whole building be subjected to one person's bad behaviour.

He even tells off management. Why they do not act now to get rid of him is beyond. He has even threatened to beat me up.
